Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL OF FIRE

Ethan hit the hard stone floor outside the vault, rolling twice before coming to a stop at the feet of Captain Thomas Ross and Julian Valentine.

Ross looked down in shock, his face covered in blood, his hands still gripping the heavy iron locking wheel.

"You idiot!" Ross snarled, raising his booted foot to crush Ethan’s head.

Ethan didn't wait for the boot to fall. He reached up, grabbed the heavy iron wheel of the vault door, and pulled himself up with explosive speed, driving his forehead straight into Ross’s already shattered nose.

Ross shrieked in agony, stumbling backward into the dark corridor.

Julian Valentine’s cold, handsome mask finally shattered. He pulled a small, nickel-plated automatic pistol from his suit jacket, his hands trembling with sudden, uncontrollable rage.

"You insolent little clerk!" Valentine screamed, aiming the pistol at Ethan’s chest. "I built this city! I own every brick! You are nothing!"

"I’m an archivist, Valentine," Ethan said, his voice deadly calm, standing tall despite the blood dripping from a cut on his brow. "And a minute ago, I published your entire life's work to the world."

Valentine froze, his finger tightening on the trigger. "What did you say?"

Ethan pulled his mobile phone from his pocket and held up the screen.

Displayed on the bright glass display was an open confirmation page from the Associated Press Global Bureau:

BREAKING NEWS ALERT: Leaked Municipal Charters and Signed Addendums Reveal $320M Illegal Land Seizure in District 9. Julian Valentine, Deputy Mayor Vance, and Precinct Nine Commander Indicted in Multi-Million Dollar Fraud and Homicide Investigation.

"It’s live on every news terminal, television station, and mobile phone in the country," Ethan said softly. "The federal prosecutors are reading your signature right now."

Valentine’s face turned the color of ash. The nickel-plated pistol trembled violently in his grip.

"No..." Valentine whispered, his billion-dollar empire crumbling into dust in a single, terrifying second. "No! I am Julian Valentine! I am the Governor!"

"You’re a murderer," a voice rang out from the end of the dark corridor.

A tactical strike team of federal marshals and State Police officers swept around the corner, their heavy tactical flashlights blinding the dark hall, twenty high-powered rifles aimed directly at Valentine’s heart.

"DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!" the strike team leader bellowed.

Captain Ross collapsed to his knees, throwing his hands above his head in complete surrender.

Julian Valentine looked at the federal officers, then at the phone screen in Ethan’s hand, and finally at his own pristine hands, which now seemed stained with invisible blood.

The small nickel-plated pistol slipped from his numb fingers, clattering uselessly against the stone floor.

Ethan stepped past the falling billionaire, grabbed the heavy iron wheel of Vault 412, and spun it open.

The heavy steel door swung wide.

Captain Miller stepped out, holding little Ben in his arms, followed by Mary Lin and her three children. They walked out of the darkness into the bright, flashing lights of federal justice.

Lily walked up to Ethan. She looked at his bleeding forehead, then at the arrested men being dragged away in heavy steel handcuffs.

"Is it over, Ethan?" Lily asked softly, her small hand reaching out to grab his thumb.

Ethan looked down at her—at her thin, brave face, her bright gray eyes, and the small, warm smile that was no longer a mask, but the genuine smile of a child who was finally, truly safe.

Ethan knelt down in front of her, pulling his heavy wool coat over her shoulders once more.

"It’s over, Lily," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. "The light won."
