Chapter 4 - THE SHATTERED FACADE

The ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel was packed with reporters, camera crews, and financial analysts by 1:50 PM.

On the raised stage stood Richard Voss, flanked by three senior attorneys in immaculate suits. To his left sat Caleb, wearing a dark suit, his face carefully sculpted into an expression of grieving innocence.

Richard stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphones. He cleared his throat, projecting the image of a titan of industry under unprovoked siege.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Richard began, his voice dripping with practiced gravity. "Over the past forty-eight hours, my family and Voss Holdings have been the targets of a vicious, coordinated smear campaign. A heavily edited, out-of-context audio recording was leaked to the press by bad-faith actors seeking to leverage a private family dispute for corporate extortion."

Caleb lowered his head, feigning solemn remorse as the camera shutters clicked frantically.

"My son, Caleb, is a dedicated husband and a loving father," Richard continued, pressing his hands against the wooden podium. "Like many young couples, Caleb and his wife have faced immense pressure following the birth of their first child. Unfortunately, outside influences—specifically an estranged family member with deep financial motives—have manipulated this delicate situation to launch a hostile takeover attempt against our firm."

"Is that so, Richard?"

The voice echoed from the back of the auditorium, clear, strong, and unyielding.

Every camera, reporter, and security guard spun around instantly.

Walking down the center aisle was Mia.

She wasn't wearing the designer dresses Caleb used to force her to wear. She wore a simple, elegant navy blue suit. Her hair was pulled back, her posture straight, her eyes fixed directly on her husband and father-in-law. I walked half a step behind her, with Evelyn Sterling at my side.

A chaotic murmur rippled through the room. Camera flashes erupted like a volley of lightning.

"Mia?!" Caleb gasped, half-rising from his chair, his face instantly turning pale.

"Sit down, Caleb," Mia said, her voice carrying across the silent ballroom without the aid of a microphone.

Richard’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure fury, but he forced a tight, public-relations smile onto his face. "Mia... dear. This is not the place for this. You are clearly exhausted. Security, please gently assist my daughter-in-law to a private suite—"

"Touch me," Mia warned as two security guards approached, "and I will have you arrested for assault on live television."

The guards hesitated, looking at the dozens of rolling cameras. They stepped back.

Mia reached the front of the stage, looking up at the two men who had tried to shrink her world into a cage of fear.

"You said the audio was edited, Richard," Mia said, looking directly into the primary news camera. "You said I was being manipulated by my mother. You called my trauma a 'private family dispute.'"

"Mia, please," Caleb stammered, stepping toward the front of the stage, his hands raised in a pleading gesture. "We can talk about this at home! Think of Noah!"

"I am thinking of Noah!" Mia shouted, her voice ringing with a fierce, unbreakable power that made Caleb flinch. "I am thinking about the fact that my son was three weeks old when you stood over his crib and let him scream until his tiny body shook, just to teach me a lesson about obedience!"

The room went dead silent. Reporters held their breath; pens froze over notebooks.

"You locked my bank accounts," Mia continued, turning her gaze onto Caleb. "You tracked my car. You told me every single day that I was worthless, that no one would ever believe me because you were a Voss and I was nobody. You made me feel like I was crazy."

Mia pulled a small black flash drive from her pocket and held it high above her head.

"This drive contains the unedited, full-length video recorded in my home," Mia announced loudly. "It contains every text message Caleb sent threatening to take my child away. It contains six months of financial records showing how Caleb illegally funneled funds from my personal trust account into his private overseas portfolios."

Richard’s face went from pale to a deep, dangerous purple. "Mia! Stop this instant! You are ruining your own husband!"

"He ruined himself the day he mistook my silence for weakness," Mia declared.

She turned to the wall of reporters.

"My name is Mia Vance," she said clearly. "And as of today, I have filed for divorce from Caleb Voss. I have filed for sole legal and physical custody of my son. And my mother and I have officially initiated a full forensic liquidation of every lease, asset, and holding tied to Voss Enterprises."

She threw the flash drive onto the press table directly in front of the lead reporter for the Wall Street Journal.

"Enjoy the footage," Mia added softly.

She turned on her heel and began walking out of the ballroom.

Caleb, completely losing his composure, rushed off the stage. "Mia! Wait! You can't do this to me! I’m your husband!"

He took three fast strides toward her, but I stepped directly into his path.

I stopped him cold with a single hand against his chest.

"One more step, Caleb," I whispered, leaning in close so only he could hear, "and the police officers waiting in the lobby will execute the arrest warrant for corporate wire fraud that Evelyn just filed thirty minutes ago."

Caleb froze, his eyes wide with absolute horror.

I smiled, a slow, icy smile. "I told you, Caleb. You have no idea what I can afford."
