Chapter 8 - WISDOM IN THE QUIET

A year later. Autumn.

The leaves on the grand maple trees surrounding the Vane estate had turned brilliant shades of gold, amber, and deep crimson. The crisp afternoon breeze blew softly across the rolling lawns, rustling the fallen leaves in quiet rhythms.

In the sunroom overlooking the gardens, a secondary wooden desk had been added beside my main mahogany table—Nora’s desk.

We sat together in the quiet warmth of the room, working on the annual foundation reports. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting golden rays over the polished wood floors.

Bria, now six and a half years old, sat on a soft wool rug nearby, working on a complex jigsaw puzzle of the Boston skyline. She was sharp, perceptive, and filled with a joy that brightened every corner of the house.

I looked up from my financial ledgers, watching Nora write notes in her precise, beautiful handwriting.

"You've been quiet for twenty minutes, Nora," I noted with a warm smile. "What are you thinking about?"

Nora set her fountain pen down, looking out the window at the autumn gardens.

"I was thinking about the night you sat two blocks away in your car," Nora said softly, turning her hazel eyes to meet mine. "About how close we came to a completely different life."

I stood up, walked over to her desk, and sat on the edge, taking her soft hand in mine.

"I was a fool that night, Nora," I admitted quietly, leaning down to look into her eyes. "I almost threw away the greatest blessing God ever sent to this house."

"You weren't a fool, Damon," Nora said gently, placing her other hand over mine. "You were a grieving man who was surrounded by people who wanted to use your pain against you. You just needed someone to remind you where home was."

"And you gave us a home," I murmured, leaning down and pressing a tender, lingering kiss to her forehead.

Bria looked up from her puzzle, giggling softly. "Daddy, are you kissing Nora again?"

I turned around, pretending to be shocked. "And what if I am, Miss Bria? Is there a law against kissing the smartest woman in Boston?"

"No!" Bria giggled, running over and jumping onto the chair beside us, wrapping her small arms around both our necks. "I think you should kiss her ten times!"

May you like

Nora laughed, a rich, happy sound that filled the room, and pulled Bria onto her lap, hugging her tight. "Ten times? That sounds like a very long meeting, Bria!"

"A very necessary meeting," I corrected, smiling warmly as I wrapped my arms around both of them.
