Chapter 5 - The Corporate Trap

It was a rainy Thursday afternoon. Adam had been forced to travel into Manhattan for an emergency in-person board meeting regarding the pending merger with European logistics giant Crown Holdings.
Laura was sitting in the library of the estate, helping Leonard with his reading homework while Leo drew pictures at the wide mahogany desk.
The library doors clicked open, and Mr. Henderson stepped inside, looking unusually tense. "Miss Chen, you have a visitor in the formal drawing room."
Laura looked up, surprised. "A visitor? For me?"
"She identified herself as Miss Evelyn Reed, Chief Legal Counsel for Bronski Enterprises," Henderson said quietly, giving Laura a subtle, warning look.
Laura placed a bookmark in Leonard’s textbook. "Leonard, stay here with Leo for a few minutes. I'll be right back."
Laura walked down the grand marble hallway toward the formal drawing room. Standing near the marble fireplace was Evelyn Reed, dressed in a flawless navy suit, clutching a slim leather briefcase. Her sharp eyes swept over Laura from head to toe, taking in her simple dress with blatant condescension.
"Miss Chen," Evelyn said, her tone smooth as silk and cold as ice. "I am Evelyn Reed. I handle legal affairs for Mr. Bronski."
"Good afternoon, Miss Reed," Laura replied politely, remaining near the doorway. "How can I help you?"
Evelyn walked over to the dark velvet sofa and sat down, crossing her long legs with practiced elegance. She opened her briefcase and pulled out a sleek tablet along with a stack of legal documents.
"I will come straight to the point, Laura," Evelyn said, dropping the friendly pretense. "Your presence in this house has become a significant liability for Mr. Bronski and Bronski Enterprises."
Laura’s expression remained perfectly neutral. "In what way?"
"Adam is currently leading a seven-billion-dollar international merger," Evelyn explained, leaning forward. "Yet over the past month, his productivity has dropped by forty percent. He is missing crucial calls, delaying board decisions, and acting on emotional impulses—such as buying a restaurant on a whim to cover up your unprofessional conduct."
"My conduct was saving his son from a mental breakdown," Laura said firmly.
"Your conduct was an embarrassing spectacle that made national tabloid news," Evelyn snapped coldly. She slid a document across the glass coffee table toward Laura. "This is an agreement of voluntary resignation and non-disclosure."
Laura didn't touch the paper. "Resignation from what? I am privately employed by Adam, not your company."
Evelyn sneered slightly. "Read the terms, Miss Chen. If you sign this document and leave the estate before six o'clock tonight, Bronski Enterprises will deposit two million dollars into a private offshore account in your name. We will also grant your brother a full, paid scholarship to an elite boarding school in Switzerland, covering all his living expenses until he turns eighteen."
Laura stared at the paper, then looked up at Evelyn’s arrogant, cold face. "And if I refuse?"
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into dark slits. She tapped her tablet screen, turning it toward Laura.
On the screen was a detailed police report from five years ago, featuring a mugshot of Laura’s younger brother, Leo, alongside a file regarding a minor shoplifting incident at a grocery store when Leo was seven years old—an incident that had been dismissed by a family court judge due to their extreme poverty after their mother fell ill.
"If you refuse," Evelyn whispered ruthlessly, "this record—along with an anonymous tip suggesting you are using your brother to orchestrate a long-term financial scam targeting a grieving billionaire—will be leaked to every major news network in New York by five o'clock. You will be dragged through the mud, your brother’s reputation will be ruined before he even starts high school, and I will personally ensure child protective services opens an investigation into your home environment."
Laura felt a cold, terrifying hand squeeze her heart. She didn't care about herself, but the threat to Leo—her innocent, sweet twelve-year-old brother who had finally found happiness in this home—sent a wave of sickening panic through her veins.

"You are a monster," Laura whispered, her hands tightening into fists at her sides.
"I am a corporate lawyer protecting a four-billion-dollar company from a gold-digger," Evelyn replied coldly, holding out an expensive Montblanc pen. "Sign the paper, Miss Chen. Take the two million, take your brother, and walk away before you destroy everything."
