Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Boardroom

The morning sun broke over Bel-Air, painting the glass walls of the Koch mansion in hues of rose and gold.

Lila woke up in the softest bed she had ever touched. For a few seconds, she forgot where she was, expecting to hear the familiar clanking of the old plumbing in her West Hollywood apartment. Then she remembered.

She swung her legs out of bed and walked into the adjoining nursery.

Maya was already awake, sitting cross-legged on a plush velvet rug, surrounded by a dozen brand-new wooden puzzles, building blocks, and a stuffed giraffe that was taller than she was.

"Mommy!" Maya squeaked, looking up with bright eyes. "Look! The tall man's house has a robot that makes pancakes!"

Lila blinked, looking toward the open door of the suite's private kitchenette. Mrs. Gable, the housekeeper, was setting a tray of fresh berries, freshly squeezed orange juice, and golden pancakes onto a small dining table.

"Good morning, Miss Collins," Mrs. Gable smiled warmly. "Mr. Koch requested that breakfast be served early. He had to leave for an emergency board meeting at the corporate headquarters, but he left this for you."

Mrs. Gable handed Lila a heavy, gold-embossed envelope.

Lila opened it. Inside was a black card with no spending limit, a high-end smartphone already programmed with Adrian's personal number, and a short note written in a bold, precise handwriting:

Lila,You and Maya are free to use the estate as you wish. A driver and security detail are at your disposal if you leave the grounds. Harrington’s legal team has already begun to crumble, but there are deeper waters moving in the city. Keep the phone with you.— A.

Lila traced the signature with her finger. There are deeper waters moving in the city.

Meanwhile, in the high-altitude boardroom on the top floor of the Apex Tower, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Adrian sat at the head of a thirty-foot mahogany table, surrounded by twelve senior board members of Koch Group. On his right sat Julian Vance, the company’s chief legal strategist and a longtime friend of the Koch family—or so Adrian had believed.

"This is madness, Adrian," Julian said, slamming a file onto the table. "You canceled the acquisition meeting yesterday, shut down three major credit lines to Harrington Enterprises, and now rumors are circulating on Wall Street that you’ve brought an unidentified woman and child into your private estate!"

"The rumors are accurate, Julian," Adrian said coldly, leaning back in his leather chair, tapping his fingers together. "The child is my daughter and sole legal heir. The woman is Lila Collins."

A shockwave of whispered murmurs rippled across the table.

"An heir?" one older board member sputtered. "Adrian, you've been a bachelor for years! Out of nowhere, a street-level waitress appears with a four-year-old child and you declare her your heir? Have you lost your mind? She could be an extortionist! A plant by your competitors!"

Adrian’s silver eyes narrowed into icy slits, the temperature in the room instantly dropping ten degrees.

"Careful, Director Davis," Adrian warned, his voice low and lethal. "You are speaking about my daughter. The DNA results were verified four hours ago by three independent laboratories. She is my blood."

Julian Vance leaned in closer, his tone dripping with fake concern. "Adrian, even if the child is yours, this Lila Collins comes from a ruined family. Her father, Richard Collins, owes millions to underground bookies. Her late grandmother’s estate is tangled in lawsuits. If the press gets hold of this, Koch Group stock will take a massive hit!"

"Let it hit," Adrian said plainly. "I own sixty percent of the voting shares. If any of you have an issue with my personal life, I will gladly accept your resignations by noon."

Silence fell over the boardroom like a heavy shroud. No one dared move.

"Now," Adrian stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Find out who leaked the information about my private estate to Harrington’s team five years ago. Because the person who drugged me at the Vesper Hotel isn't Edward Harrington."

He looked directly into Julian Vance’s eyes.

"It was someone sitting in this room."
