Chapter 17 - The Gathering in Lake Forest

By late autumn of 2027, the dry heat of Sicily had faded into the crisp, cool autumn of Lake Forest, Illinois. The leaves on the massive oak trees surrounding the Duca estate had turned into brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold, falling gently onto the brick paths that wound through the rear lawn.
The estate had changed. The high-security gates were still there, but the air of cold, tense secrecy that had once defined the property had been replaced by a warm, welcoming energy.
The greenhouse, once a quiet sanctuary where Lena had recovered from her injuries, was now a bustling hub of activity. Isabella Duca, her face fully radiant and healthy, was working alongside several local horticulturists, preparing the Black Baccara roses for the winter season.
Danny Carter had transitioned from his role as a shadow analyst to the Director of the newly established Vance-Duca Foundation, which occupied a beautiful, historic brick building in downtown Chicago. The foundation, funded entirely by the liquidated assets of the Caprese family and the surplus of the Duca estate, had already sponsored over fifty pediatric surgeries at the St. Jude Facility.
On a chilly October evening, the fireplace in the Duca mansion’s grand living room was crackling with a warm, inviting fire.
Lena sat on the plush sofa, her legs tucked under her, a cup of hot tea in her hands. Beside her sat Isabella, who was happily showing her a scrapbook of the foundation’s recent charity gala.
"Look at this, Lena," Isabella smiled, pointing to a photograph of Danny standing next to a young girl in a wheelchair, both of them beaming with joy. "Danny has found his true calling. He’s not just surviving anymore. He’s helping others live."
"He learned from the best, Isabella," Lena said, looking toward the window.
Outside, in the fading light of the afternoon, Marco was walking through the gardens. He was dressed in a casual cashmere sweater and dark jeans, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He was talking to Dr. Vance, who had traveled from Chicago to perform a routine check-up on Lena’s hip.
Dr. Vance looked at Marco, a warm, professional smile on his face. "Her recovery is nothing short of miraculous, Marco. The bone density in her hip has fully restored, and the nerve damage has bypassed itself. She’ll always have a slight stiffness in the cold weather, but she doesn't even need the cane anymore."
"I know," Marco said, his voice filled with a quiet, profound gratitude. "But she still keeps it by the door. She says it reminds her of where we came from."
"And what about you, Marco?" Dr. Vance asked, looking closely at the former Don. "How is your heart?"

Marco looked back at the warm lights of the mansion, where Lena was laughing with his sister.
"My heart is finally beating for the right reasons, Doctor," Marco replied.
