Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of Healing

Three months later.

The winter snow had melted from the Portland hills, replaced by the soft, green shoots of early spring. The courtyard of the Portland Rehabilitation Center was bathed in warm, golden afternoon sunlight.

The news of the Vanguard BioTech scandal had rocked the global medical and financial worlds. Arthur Gideon and four top executives were currently awaiting trial on federal charges of manslaughter, fraud, and illegal military experimentation.

The experimental research data seized by federal authorities had been transferred to a public medical research foundation—co-chaired by Dr. Mason Ryder and Sienna Ashford—dedicated to developing safe, accessible therapies for children with spinal cord injuries.

In the center of the green courtyard, a crowd of patients, therapists, and facility staff had gathered around the stone paved walking path.

Ava Ashford stood at the start of the path.

She wasn't wearing a back brace. She wasn't holding onto parallel bars. She wore a bright red spring coat, blue jeans, and a pair of yellow sneakers.

Mason crouched ten feet away at the end of the path, wearing his dark blue shirt, his hands resting easily on his knees.

Sienna stood nearby, holding a camera, her face shining with an emotion so deep and profound it transcended tears.

"Take your time, Ava," Mason said softly, his voice carrying that same unshakable, calm authority that had first caught her attention in the third-floor corridor four months ago. "Feel the ground."

Ava looked at Mason. She took a deep, clear breath—filling her lungs completely, without a single trace of pain or fire in her back.

"I feel it, Mr. Mason," Ava said, her voice clear, strong, and musical. "It feels warm."

She lifted her right foot.

She stepped forward.

One.

She lifted her left foot.

Two.

Three. Four. Five.

The small crowd burst into quiet, breathless applause as Ava walked across the stone path—not with the robotic stiffness of a medical patient, but with the natural, joyful rhythm of a nine-year-old girl coming home to her own body.

She reached Mason, took the final step, and threw her arms around his neck.

Mason caught her easily, lifting her into the air with a bright, deep laugh that echoed across the courtyard, before setting her gently back down on her feet.

Sienna walked over, wrapping her arms around both of them, pulling Ava and Mason tight against her heart.

Ava looked up at her mother, then at Mason, her brown eyes filled with pure light.

"I told you, Mommy," Ava whispered softly, leaning her head against Mason's shoulder. "He knew."
