Chapter 8 - The Proposal in the Snow

A year later.

Winter had returned to Chicago, but this time, it brought no terror—only beauty.

It was Christmas Eve. A soft, gentle snow fell over Lake Forest, dusting the dark green pine trees of the Vale estate in sparkling white.

Inside the mansion, the grand living room was filled with warmth. A massive fifteen-foot Christmas tree stood beside the roaring marble fireplace, decorated with golden lights, crystal ornaments, and hand-painted baubles.

Eighteen-month-old Clara was running across the thick Persian rug in a festive red dress, giggling as Marcus—who had somehow been promoted from head of security to official honorary uncle—chased her with a soft plush reindeer toy.

"Uncle Marcus, catch me!" Clara giggled in her cute, toddler voice, her dark curls bouncing.

"I’m getting you, Princess!" Marcus laughed, walking deliberately slow, letting her win.

Emma sat on the sofa, watching them with a warm cup of hot chocolate in her hands, her heart bursting with happiness. Caldwell Freight Systems was thriving under her leadership as board chair, having expanded into green energy shipping logistics. She was respected, fulfilled, and loved beyond measure.

Adrian walked into the living room, wearing a black turtleneck sweater and trousers. He looked relaxed, his dark eyes glowing with a calm, steady light.

"Marcus," Adrian called out with a smirk. "Don't break my furniture."

"Just fulfilling my security duties, boss," Marcus chuckled, picking up Clara and setting her safely onto his shoulders. "I'll take the princess to the kitchen to get some gingerbread cookies."

"Double cookie!" Clara cheered, waving her tiny hands.

When Marcus and Clara exited toward the kitchen, the living room settled into a quiet, peaceful intimacy.

Adrian walked over to Emma, taking the mug from her hands and setting it on the coffee table. He took her hands, pulling her up from the sofa.

"Walk with me," Adrian said softly.

"Outside?" Emma laughed, looking at the snow falling outside the French doors.

"Just to the terrace," he smiled.

He pulled a heavy, warm fur coat over her shoulders and led her out onto the covered stone terrace overlooking the snow-covered gardens. The air was crisp and fresh, lit by hundreds of warm fairy lights strung through the stone arches.

Emma leaned against the stone railing, watching the gentle snow fall over the peaceful grounds.

"It’s hard to believe," Emma whispered, her breath forming tiny white puffs in the cold air. "Two years ago, I was standing in the snow on York Road, barefoot, convinced I was going to die."

Adrian stepped behind her, wrapping his arms securely around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. His warmth instantly pushed away the winter chill.

"You were never going to die, Emma," Adrian murmured in her ear. "The universe brought me to that road because my life didn't mean anything until I found you again."

Emma turned in his arms, looking up into his handsome face. "Your life meant plenty, Mr. Vale."

"No," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a deep, serious tone. "I had power, money, and control. But I was living in the dark. You and Clara brought the light."

Adrian reached into his pocket and slowly dropped to one knee on the snow-dusted stone of the terrace.

Emma gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

He opened a velvet box. Inside rested a magnificent, flawless five-carat oval diamond ring, set in a band of platinum, shimmering brilliantly under the warm fairy lights.

"Emma Caldwell," Adrian said, his gray eyes looking into hers with a devotion so pure and absolute it made her breath catch. "You are my heart, my sanctuary, and my home. I swear to protect you, respect you, and love you for every remaining day of my life. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy filled Emma’s eyes, spilling down her rosy cheeks.

"Yes!" Emma sobbed, stepping forward and throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Adrian! A thousand times, yes!"

Adrian stood up, laughing softly, slipping the ring onto her finger before lifting her into his arms and pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss as the gentle snow fell around them like a curtain of white silk.
