Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in Glass and Steel

The lobby of the Moretti Tower was a cathedral of white marble, brushed bronze, and bulletproof glass.

Phillip Lawson stood near the security desk, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive coat. He was trying hard to project the quiet confidence of a high-powered real estate developer, but the sweat glistening at his temples betrayed him. Two burly security guards in dark suits stood six feet away, their arms folded, watching his every move like hawks.

The private elevator doors slid open with a soft chime.

Dominic Moretti stepped out alone. He wore no jacket, just his charcoal henley and trousers, his hands resting casually in his pockets.

Phillip straightened his spine, stepping forward. "Moretti. I need a word with you."

Dominic stopped ten feet away, his expression entirely unreadable. "You have thirty seconds before my security team removes you for trespassing."

Phillip sneered, trying to regain his footing. "Let’s cut the nonsense. I know my wife is here. She’s unstable, Moretti. She’s suffered a nervous breakdown and she’s being manipulated by whoever is advising her. Whatever she told you about Tuesday night—"

"She didn't tell me anything about Tuesday night," Dominic interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, cold and resonant. "I watched you open your car door at thirty miles an hour and throw her onto the asphalt."

Phillip’s face went chalk-white. "That... that was an accident! She panicked! She tried to step out of the vehicle while—"

"Save it for the grand jury, Lawson," Dominic said flatly.

Phillip took a step closer, lowering his voice into a sharp hiss. "You think you’re noble, don't you? Taking in my pathetic little charity-case wife? You don't know her, Moretti! She’s a anchor around your neck! She has no ambition, no taste, no style! I gave her a luxury lifestyle, and all she did was complain that I was too busy build an empire!"

Dominic didn't flinch. He didn't raise his fist. He simply took one slow step forward, closing the distance until his imposing six-foot-three frame towered over Phillip.

"She is twice the person you will ever be," Dominic said quietly, every word dropping like a lead weight. "You used her name to commit millions of dollars in corporate bank fraud because you were too coward to put your own signature on dirty permits. You hit her because she made you feel small. And you left her in the rain because you thought nobody was watching."

Phillip swallowed hard, backing up an inch. "This is business, Moretti! Keep my personal life out of your dock disputes!"

"You made her my business the moment you dropped her on my pavement," Dominic said. "Here is what is going to happen, Lawson. By four o'clock today, the State’s Attorney will freeze your personal bank accounts. By tomorrow morning, the construction cranes on River East will be dismantled and impounded for structural safety violations. And by next week, your board of directors will vote to remove you as CEO to protect themselves from federal indictment."

Phillip’s eyes darted wildly toward the glass doors. "You can't do this! I have contacts in the Mayor’s office!"

"The Mayor calls me when he needs his port operational, Lawson," Dominic said coldly. "He doesn't call a disgraced middle-market developer with a pending domestic assault warrant."

Dominic turned his back on Phillip, walking toward the elevator.

"She’s nothing!" Phillip screamed after him, his composure completely shattering as security guards grabbed his arms. "She’s a nobody! You hear me, Moretti? She’s a fat, worthless nobody!"

Dominic stopped at the elevator doors. He did not turn around, but his voice carried across the silent marble lobby with terrifying clarity.

"To a blind man," Dominic said softly, "even the sun looks like nothing."

The elevator doors chimed and closed, leaving Phillip Lawson shouting obscenities as he was dragged out into the Chicago cold.
