Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Dark

While peace had settled over Emily’s world, the corporate waters surrounding Bennett Global were beginning to stir with fresh drama.
At five o’clock that afternoon, Julian sat in his corner office, reviewing a series of confidential financial reports sent by his private intelligence team.
Sitting across from him was Marcus Vance, his senior criminal defense partner.
“We ran a deep background check on the remaining shareholders of Carter Holdings,” Marcus reported, laying a thick dossier on Julian’s mahogany desk. “When Margaret was arrested, her firm’s stock plummeted to zero. However, someone has been quietly buying up the distressed debt over the last ten days.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed. “Who?”
“A private equity firm registered in Delaware called Apex Capital,” Marcus said. “We traced the shell companies back through three layers of Swiss bank accounts. The ultimate controlling partner of Apex Capital is a man named Victor Hale.”
Julian froze. His dark eyes turned to cold stone. “Vanessa Hale’s father.”
“Yes,” Marcus nodded grimly. “Victor Hale is a ruthless hedge fund manager based in Atlanta. He was estranged from Vanessa for years, but now that his daughter is facing five years in a federal penitentiary, he’s coming to Charlotte.”
“He thinks he can use Carter Holdings’ remaining assets to mount a legal counter-offensive against Emily,” Julian surmised instantly, his voice dropping into a lethal register.
“Worse,” Marcus added. “Victor Hale has filed a formal petition with the state Attorney General, claiming that Bennett Global used undue influence, corporate coercion, and illegal surveillance to force Vanessa’s confession.”
Julian let out a cold, low laugh that sent a chill through the quiet office.
Victor Hale was a powerful man in southern financial circles—a predator who had made hundreds of millions by gutting failing companies and destroying his rivals. He believed he could step into Charlotte, wave his hedge-fund billions around, and intimidate Julian Bennett into dropping the criminal charges against his daughter.
Julian stood up slowly, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Charlotte skyline.
“Victor Hale doesn't understand who he’s dealing with,” Julian said softly, his voice vibrating with absolute, terrifying power. “He thinks this is a corporate battle over distressed assets.”
He turned back to face his attorney, his dark eyes blazing with an icy fury.
“Instruct our legal team to initiate a hostile takeover of Apex Capital’s primary lending banks by six p.m. tomorrow,” Julian commanded smoothly. “I want Victor Hale bankrupt, discredited, and kneeling in this office before the end of the week.”
“Right away, Mr. Bennett,” Marcus Vance bowed his head, stepping out of the office.
Julian picked up his desk phone and dialed the inner line to the executive kitchen.
The line rang twice before Emily’s sweet, warm voice answered. “Hello?”
Julian’s expression softened instantly, the cold, lethal killer vanishing, replaced by the gentle protector.
“Emily,” Julian said softly. “Pack a small bag for you and Noah. We’re going to my lake house in Asheville for the weekend.”
“Asheville?” Emily asked, surprise in her voice. “Is everything okay, Julian?”
“Everything is perfect,” Julian lied smoothly, a subtle smile touching his lips. “I just want to show my family the mountains.”

My family.
The words echoed through the phone line, making Emily’s heart leap into her throat with a sudden, beautiful wave of warmth.
