Chapter 1 - The Weight of Seven Words

The hospital room was quiet save for the rhythmic, electronic hum of the heart monitor. Joan lay perfectly still, the warmth of Betty’s small hand providing the only anchor to reality. The child’s words echoed in the sterile air, hanging heavily between them.

"Please don't leave me. Everyone leaves me. Please."

Joan’s heart ached. She looked at the little girl, whose tear-stained face was buried against her hospital gown. Before Joan could formulate a response, the heavy wooden door of the private room swung open. Two men entered. The first was Marcus, her floor manager from the Silver Oak, looking pale and completely out of his depth. Behind him stood a tall, imposing man in a bespoke charcoal suit. His posture was rigid, his face carved from granite, but his eyes—dark and piercing—were filled with a chaotic mixture of terror and authority.

"Betty!" the man gasped, his voice a low baritone that commanded the room.

Hearing his voice, Betty didn't let go of Joan. Instead, she twisted her body, pulling Joan’s hand closer to her chest as if using the injured waitress as a shield. "Daddy," she whispered, but she didn't run to him.

The man, Richard Seagull, froze. He looked at his daughter's defensive posture, then shifted his gaze to Joan. The sheer intensity of his stare made Joan’s pulse spike. He approached the bed slowly, dropping to his knees so he was at eye level with Joan.

"Miss Rhodes," Richard said, his voice trembling slightly beneath its cold exterior. "The doctors told me what you did. You threw yourself in front of a gunman to protect my daughter. You took a blow to the ribs and shrapnel to the head. The police told me that if you hadn't moved when you did... Betty wouldn't be here."

"I just... I saw her standing there," Joan whispered, her throat dry. "I couldn't let them hurt her."

Richard took a deep breath, bowing his head for a brief moment. When he looked up, the powerful billionaire looked entirely vulnerable. "My wife was killed in a hit-and-run eighteen months ago. Betty has been targets of threats ever since. I thought I could protect her with security, with isolation. But today... today I almost lost my entire world. You saved her. Name your price, Miss Rhodes. Anything you want—money, a new life, anything. It’s yours."

Joan looked at Betty, who was staring at her with wide, pleading eyes. Joan thought of her overdue rent, her cracked phone, her invisible life. But looking at this broken little girl, money felt empty.

"I don't want your money, Mr. Seagull," Joan said softly. "I just want to know that she’s safe."

Before Richard could answer, Betty leaned up and whispered something into Joan's ear that made Joan's blood run cold: "Daddy's friends are the ones who sent the bad men."
