CHAPTER 2: THE LAWYER WHO NEVER LOSES

Gabrielle Thompson didn’t enter rooms.
She took them over.
The moment she stepped out of the elevator, the atmosphere in Cameron Rivers’ penthouse changed again—not like before, when Cameron’s presence lowered the temperature into something dangerous, but sharper now, more precise.
Controlled chaos becoming controlled law.
Gabrielle’s heels clicked once against the marble floor.
Then she stopped.
Looked at Cameron.
Looked at Derek.
Looked at Tiffany Blake.
“Tell me,” she said calmly, “which one of you wants to pretend this is still negotiable.”
Nobody answered.
That was her favorite kind of silence.
Derek shifted first.
“Gabrielle—this is a misunderstanding.”
She tilted her head slightly.
“A misunderstanding.”
She repeated the words like she was tasting something expired.
Then she turned her gaze to Cameron.
“You called me for a misunderstanding?”
Cameron held up the phone.
The video still paused on Tiffany’s hand tangled in Simone’s hair.
Gabrielle watched it once.
Then again.
No reaction.
No shock.
No visible anger.
That, more than anything, unsettled Tiffany.
Gabrielle exhaled slowly.
“This isn’t a misunderstanding,” she said.
Then she looked directly at Tiffany.
“This is evidence.”
Tiffany scoffed, but it came out weaker than she intended.
“She tripped,” she said quickly. “Pregnant women are dramatic. Everyone knows that.”
Gabrielle didn’t blink.
“Say that in court.”
Derek stepped forward again.
“This doesn’t need to go to court.”
Gabrielle finally looked at him.
And something in her expression softened—but not kindly.
Like a surgeon looking at a patient who waited too long.
“You’re right,” she said.
Derek visibly relaxed.
Then she finished:
“It doesn’t need to go to court.”
A pause.
“It needs to go public.”
The room went still.
Even Tiffany stopped moving.
Derek’s face drained.
“You wouldn’t.”
Gabrielle smiled faintly.
“I don’t threaten,” she said. “I organize outcomes.”
Cameron crossed his arms behind her.
“And the outcome here?”
Gabrielle turned slightly, already mentally building it.
“Assault on a pregnant woman aboard an international flight,” she said. “Corporate negligence. Failure of duty of care. Potential coercion if we prove she was invited under false pretenses.”
Tiffany’s voice sharpened.
“You’re insane.”
Gabrielle nodded politely.
“Frequently.”
Then she added:
“And always prepared.”
Derek ran a hand through his hair.
“This will destroy my career.”
Gabrielle looked at him for a long moment.
Then said quietly:
“No.”
A pause.
“This will reveal it.”
That landed harder than anger.
Because truth always does.
Cameron stepped forward.
“What do you need?”
Gabrielle didn’t hesitate.
“Simone.”
Derek stiffened immediately.
“No.”
Both women turned to him.
Gabrielle raised an eyebrow.
“No?”
“She doesn’t need to be involved in this.”
Cameron let out a cold laugh.
“She was involved the moment your wife put her hands on her.”
Derek looked desperate now.
“She’s pregnant, she doesn’t understand legal—”
Gabrielle cut him off.
“She understands survival.”
Silence.
That word hit differently.
Because it was true.
They all knew it.
Gabrielle stepped closer to Derek.
“Let me explain something to you,” she said quietly.
Derek didn’t move.
“When a woman is assaulted in public,” she continued, “there are two stories that get told.”
She raised one finger.
“The story you want told.”
Then a second.
“And the story the evidence tells.”
She lowered her hand.
“And I promise you, Derek… the evidence is very clear.”
Tiffany suddenly grabbed her glass.
“Fine,” she snapped. “Release it. I don’t care.”
Gabrielle looked at her for a long second.
Then nodded once.
“That’s your first mistake.”
Tiffany frowned.
“I don’t make mistakes.”
Gabrielle replied instantly:
“You just made two.”
A beat.
“First—you assumed this is about you.”
Tiffany opened her mouth.
Gabrielle raised a hand.
“Second—you assumed you’ll still have control after it spreads.”
That silence was different.
Heavier.
Cameron checked his phone.
Messages were already coming in.
Internal.
Legal.
Media.
Someone had leaked a rumor.
Not the video yet.
Just smoke.
But smoke always meant fire was coming.
He looked at Gabrielle.
“We move now.”
She nodded.
“We already are.”
Meanwhile, across the city, Simone Rivers stood in her sister’s kitchen.
Gabrielle’s apartment overlooked the South Side—older building, warmer light, quieter than Cameron’s world of glass and steel.
Simone had not slept.
Her hand rested protectively on her stomach.
Every few minutes, the baby moved.
As if reminding her she wasn’t alone.
Gabrielle had told her to stay there.
Stay safe.
Stay still.
But Simone wasn’t built for stillness.
She stared at the news notification on her phone.
It hadn’t broken yet.
But something was coming.
She felt it in her bones.
And then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Silence on the other end.
Then Derek’s voice.
“Simone.”
She didn’t respond immediately.
Not because she was surprised.
Because she wasn’t.
“What do you want?” she asked quietly.
“I need you to listen.”
She laughed once.
Small.
Dry.
“Took you long enough to need something.”
A pause.
“I didn’t know it would go like this.”
“That’s funny,” she said. “Because I did.”
Silence.
Then Derek’s voice cracked slightly.
“I didn’t stop her fast enough.”
Simone closed her eyes.
That sentence should have meant something.
Once.
It didn’t anymore.
“Why are you calling me?”
A long pause.
Then:
“Because Cameron is involved now.”
Her grip tightened.
That name mattered.
Not Derek.
Not Tiffany.
Cameron.
“What does he want?”
Derek hesitated.
“To destroy everything.”
Simone opened her eyes slowly.
For the first time, something shifted inside her.
Not fear.
Decision.
“Good,” she said.
Derek went silent.
“What?”
She repeated it more firmly.
“Good.”
Then she ended the call.
And placed her hand on her belly.
“I told you,” she whispered, “this isn’t the end.”
Back at the penthouse, Gabrielle closed her laptop.
“Okay,” she said.
Cameron looked up.
“What now?”
She met his eyes.
“Now we make sure she can’t disappear from this story.”
Derek frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Gabrielle answered without looking at him.
“It means Tiffany Blake is about to learn what happens when you touch the wrong woman…”
A pause.
“…and the wrong family.”
Cameron’s phone buzzed again.
This time, it wasn’t internal.
It was external.
A media outlet had picked up the story.
Headline forming.
Still incomplete.
But inevitable.
“Private Jet Incident Involving CEO’s Brother Sparks Corporate Investigation”
Cameron stared at it.
Then at Gabrielle.
“We’re out of time.”
She nodded.
“No,” she corrected.
“We’re exactly on time.”
And somewhere in the city, Tiffany Blake finally realized something terrifying:
This was no longer a fight she could win with charm.
Or money.
Or denial.
Because now…
it was a system moving against her.
May you like
And systems do not stop.
They only escalate.
