Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Julian Thorne

The name hung in the damp air of the bank vault like a cloud of smoke.
Julian Thorne was notorious in New England finance. A former naval intelligence officer who had built a ten-billion-dollar private equity empire, Thorne was known as a corporate predator who hunted unethical firms, bought up their distressed debt, and dismantled them piece by piece in bankruptcy court.
He was also a recluse. He rarely gave interviews, never appeared at society galas, and operated out of a heavily guarded compound in Beacon Hill.
"Claire slept with Julian Thorne?" Marcus asked, his eyes wide behind his glasses. "Nora, if Lucas finds out that his greatest enemy is the father of the child he tried to steal, he won't just file lawsuits. He'll destroy everything in his path."
"Claire didn't just sleep with him, Marcus," I said, staring at the screen where my dead sister's face remained frozen. "Look at her expression. This wasn't an affair born out of weakness or revenge. This was a tactical alliance."
I clicked play on the laptop again.
Claire’s voice resumed:
"Julian knows everything, Nora. He knows about Whitmore Capital’s money laundering for the European shipping cartels. He knows about Vanessa’s fake medical records. And he knows that Lucas planned to let me die. Julian gave me the cell-free DNA testing kit, he hired Dr. Everett to protect me in the delivery room, and he financed the legal team that gave you custody of Henry."
Claire leaned forward, staring directly into the camera lens as if she were looking right into my eyes across the veil of death.
"Go to Julian, Nora. Take my son to him. Show him the diary. Tell him the 'Third Account' is unlocked. He will give you the army you need to destroy them."
The video screen went black.
I stood in silence for a long moment, watching the small green light on the flash drive pulse in the dim vault.
"We need to get to Beacon Hill," I said, closing the laptop and packing it into Marcus's bag.
"Nora, wait," Marcus cautioned, placing a hand on my arm. "Thorne isn't a savior. He’s a shark. He’s been trying to gut Whitmore Capital for half a decade. What if he used Claire just like Lucas did? What if he just wanted an heir to claim a legal clawback on the Whitmore estate?"
"Then I'll handle him the same way I handle every lying billionaire I investigate," I said, pulling my sister’s wedding ring out of my pocket and sliding it onto my middle finger. "With facts, bank statements, and zero fear."
We left the bank vault and stepped out onto Congress Street.
The morning rush hour was in full swing, yellow taxis splashing through muddy slush along the curb. As we stepped toward the corner to hail a cab, a sleek silver Audi pulled up to the fire hydrant right in front of us.
The back door opened.
Vanessa Hale stepped out onto the sidewalk.
She was no longer wearing the silk dress from the hospital. She wore an expensive camel-hair coat, dark sunglasses, and high boots. But behind the sunglasses, her face was swollen and red.
Two heavy-set men in dark suits stepped out behind her—Whitmore corporate security guards.
"Nora," Vanessa said, her voice sharp, desperate, and trembling.
Marcus immediately stepped in front of me, putting his arm out. "Stay back, Miss Hale."
"Get out of the way, nerd!" Vanessa snapped, pushing past Marcus to look directly at me. She pulled her sunglasses down, revealing dark circles under her eyes. "Nora, you need to listen to me right now. You don't know what you're doing."
"I know exactly what I'm doing, Vanessa," I said, keeping my voice steady. "I'm protecting my nephew from the woman who tried to wear his mother's jewelry while she bled out in an operating room."
Vanessa's lip trembled, but her eyes flared with a strange, frantic terror. "You think I wanted Claire to die?! You think this was my idea?!"
"You smiled in the hallway, Vanessa," I spat. "I saw you."
"I smiled because Lucas told me it was over!" Vanessa yelled, tears suddenly spilling over her lashes. "He told me Claire was going to agree to a quiet settlement! He told me he was taking the baby and that Claire was going to live in France! I didn't know he paid the anesthesiologist to alter her dosage!"
The street noise around us seemed to mute instantly.
Marcus froze. I froze.
"What did you just say?" I asked, my voice dropping into a register so low it sounded like grinding stone.
Vanessa looked around frantically at her two security guards, who stood like stone statues on the sidewalk.
"Lucas... Lucas set up the C-section with a private surgical team from his father's medical network," Vanessa stammered, wiping her nose with the back of her glove. "He told them Claire had a history of malignant hyperthermia. They used an old anesthetic protocol... he wanted her to go into cardiac arrest on the table so it would look like a natural surgical complication!"
She took two steps toward me, her hands outstretched in a desperate plea.
"They're going to kill me next, Nora," Vanessa whimpered, her voice breaking into full-blown panic. "Because I know. And because my baby... my baby died in the womb four weeks ago! Lucas made me pretend I was still pregnant so we could carry out the swap!"
I stared at her, feeling a cold, terrifying wave of horror wash over my mind.
The depth of the Whitmores' depravity wasn't just corporate corruption. It was cold, calculated, premeditated murder.
"Where is Lucas now?" I asked.
"He's at the probate court with his father's lawyers," Vanessa gasped. "They're filing emergency paperwork to declare Claire's will invalid on the grounds of mental incompetence. They have a judge in their pocket, Nora. If you don't give them that baby by noon, they are going to issue a bench warrant for your arrest."
Before I could answer, a heavy black SUV turned the corner at high speed, its tires screeching against the wet pavement.

The tinted side window rolled down, and the barrel of a suppressed firearm appeared in the dark opening.
"DOWN!" Marcus screamed, tackling me to the freezing pavement just as two soft thwip-thwip sounds cut through the morning air.
