Chapter 2 - The Inner Sanctum

The interior of the house was exactly as they had left it before the funeral, yet the air felt charged with a strange, historic electricity. Hazel sat at the kitchen table, the contents of Jasper’s brown folder spread out under the soft glow of the pendant lights. Toby sat across from her, an ice pack pressed to his bruised cheek, while Rose slept soundly on the living room sofa, exhausted from the day's trauma.

The front door opened, and Miriam Cole stepped into the house. She was a striking woman in her early fifties, wearing a sharp grey trench coat, her dark eyes flashing with a fierce, protective intelligence. She wasn't just a high-powered corporate attorney; she had been Jasper’s closest confidante during his final months, a legal shield he had forged in secret while the cancer slowly claimed his body.

"Are you alright, Hazel?" Miriam asked, dropping her briefcase onto the counter and immediately inspecting Toby’s face. "The deputy took the formal statement regarding the assault on Toby. The district attorney will be reviewing the footage from the neighbor’s security camera by tomorrow morning."

"I’m fine, Miriam," Hazel said, her hands smoothing over the notarized stock certificates. "But I need to understand what I’m holding. Jasper spent his last weeks talking about protecting us, but I never imagined... this. How did he keep a sixty-eight percent stake hidden from his parents for over a decade?"

Miriam sat down, pulling a sleek tablet from her briefcase. "Because Frederick is a narcissist who believes his own myth, Hazel. He genuinely thought the blind trust was just a tax shelter Jasper set up to minimize corporate liabilities. He never actually read the underlying trust agreements because he assumed Jasper would never have the courage to cross him. He didn't know that his own father, Arthur, had left a confession detailing every single dollar Frederick stole from the company back in 2014."

"What’s on the flash drive?" Toby asked, his voice thick but resolute.

"Everything," Miriam said, plugging the drive into her tablet. A massive directory of financial ledgers, wire transfers, and encrypted emails populated the screen. "Jasper didn't just inherit the stock, Toby. He spent the last two years auditing the company from his hospital bed. He discovered that after Arthur died, Frederick didn't stop stealing. He has been laundering millions through a shell company called 'Apex Logistics' to fund his private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. He has crippled Beaumont Timber. If the board finds out, the company will face complete collapse, and Frederick will spend the rest of his natural life in a federal penitentiary."

Hazel leaned back, the sheer scale of her husband’s sacrifice washing over her. While he was fighting for every breath, enduring agonizing rounds of chemotherapy, he had been fighting a silent, desperate war to ensure that his family would never be at the mercy of his predatory parents.

"So what happens tomorrow?" Hazel asked.

"Tomorrow at nine AM is the annual emergency shareholder meeting," Miriam said, a cold smile touching her lips. "Frederick has called it specifically to vote on a resolution to freeze Jasper's estate and seize his corporate shares under a 'family emergency succession' clause. He thinks he’s going to walk into that boardroom and strip you of everything."

"He doesn't know I have the sixty-eight percent voting power," Hazel realized.

"No," Miriam countered. "He thinks he owns the room. He thinks you're going to stay hidden in your sister's guest house, weeping and helpless. We are going to let him present his motion. We are going to let him give his grand speech about family legacy. And then, Hazel, you are going to stand up and strip him of his crown in front of every director he has ever lied to."

Toby looked at his mother, the swelling on his cheek framed by a look of fierce pride. "I want to be there, Mom. I want to see his face when he realizes he can't touch us anymore."

Hazel reached across the table, taking her son’s hand. "You will be there, Toby. Both of you will. Your father didn't build this shield for me to hide behind. He built it for us to stand on."
