Chapter 6 - The Trap Inside the Network

The revelations hung in the air like a cloud of poison gas.

We returned to the private conference room, locking the doors behind us and posting Marcus Vance’s security team at every entrance.

Julian pulled a tablet from his briefcase and projected a complex network diagram onto the central display screen.

“When Vanessa married you, Daniel,” Julian explained, pointing at the nodes connecting Vanguard to various international defense contractors, “she wasn't acting alone. Her brother Cole was her handler. Their goal was simple: orchestrate Daniel’s death, collect the executive insurance policies, seize control of the master patent vault, and transfer the biological research data to Blackwood’s facility in Geneva.”

“That’s why she wanted the coffin buried so quickly,” I realized, the horror dawning on me. “She wasn't just hiding David’s body. She was trying to finalize the legal death certificate so she could execute the patent transfer before anyone realized Daniel was alive!”

“Exactly,” Julian nodded. “And when you showed up at that graveyard with that injunction, Margaret, you didn't just save Daniel’s life—you broke a five-year covert operation.”

Daniel sat down heavily at the table, rubbing his forehead. “So Vanessa and Cole are just lower-level operatives. The real threat is her father.”

“General Blackwood is currently in Boston,” Julian said grimly. “He arrived on a private jet two hours ago. He knows Vanessa and Cole have been arrested. He knows the federal government is reviewing Vanguard’s server logs. He has forty-eight hours before federal warrants are issued for his arrest.”

“Then he’s going to run,” I said.

“No,” Julian replied, looking me straight in the eye. “A man like Richard Blackwood doesn't run while the evidence still exists. He burns the evidence—and anyone who holds it.”

Right on cue, the lights in the thirty-second-floor office building flickered once, twice, and died.

The hum of the air conditioning cut off. The large electronic glass panels in the conference room switched from transparent to opaque black as the automated security overrides engaged.

The emergency red lighting kicked on, bathing the room in an eerie, crimson glow.

Outside in the hallway, a heavy metallic thud sounded as the main floor elevators were remotely locked down on the ground floor.

“They’re here,” Marcus Vance’s voice came through Daniel’s radio receiver. “We have three unidentified armed men entering the executive suite from the service stairwell! They’ve disabled the floor’s power grid!”

Julian didn't panic. He reached under his bespoke suit coat and unholstered a compact, suppressed semi-automatic handgun—a weapon he handled with the terrifying familiarity of a former operative.

“Daniel,” Julian commanded, his voice cold and commanding. “Take your mother into the vault behind the master desk. Now!”

“I’m not leaving you again, Dad!” Daniel shouted, reaching into his own coat to pull out the licensed firearm Marcus had provided him three days ago. “We fight together!”

I looked at my husband, then at my son—the two men I had loved more than my own life, standing side by side in the red darkness.

“Nobody is dying today,” I declared, grabbing a heavy steel paperweight from the desk. “We built this company. Now let's protect it.”
