Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Evan Miller

By Friday afternoon, two weeks after Christmas, the final trap snapped shut around Evan Miller.

Deprived of Claire’s cooperation, locked out of all corporate lines, blocked on every phone number, and completely broke, Evan had reached the absolute end of his rope.

At 3:00 P.M., wearing a wrinkled, unwashed suit that smelled of stale cigarettes and cheap motel room air, Evan burst through the glass doors of Hale & Associates on Wilshire Boulevard.

He shoved past the receptionist, charging down the long carpeted hallway toward Marcus Hale’s corner office.

"Hale!" Evan roared, kicking open the double mahogany doors. "Where is she?! Where is Eleanor?!"

Marcus Hale was sitting at his grand desk, sipping espresso, reviewing a legal brief. Standing beside him were two uniformed LAPD officers and a representative from the United States Trustee's Office.

Marcus set his espresso cup down, looking up at Evan with an expression of supreme, calm detachment.

"Good afternoon, Evan," Marcus said smoothly. "We were expecting you."

"Don't give me that calm lawyer crap!" Evan screamed, his face flushed red, sweat dripping down his temples. "You and Eleanor ruined my life! You ruined my reputation! You stole my wife! You froze my personal accounts! That's illegal! I'm filing a fifty-million-dollar lawsuit against Vance Logistics for tortious interference!"

The trustee representative—a sharp, stern woman in a dark gray suit—stood up, pulling a thick blue folder from her briefcase.

"Mr. Evan Miller?" the woman asked formally.

"Who the hell are you?!" Evan barked.

"I am Special Agent Sarah Jenkins from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Corporate Fraud Division," the woman replied, displaying a silver federal badge. "And I am serving you with a federal arrest warrant."

Evan froze, his eyes widening in absolute terror. "A... a what?!"

"Mr. Miller," Agent Jenkins read from the document, "you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate identity theft, tax evasion, and grand larceny involving the unauthorized transfer of one point eight million dollars from Vance Global Logistics into offshore shell accounts owned by Miller Creative Media."

"What?!" Evan gasped, backing toward the door. "That's a lie! Eleanor authorized those transfers! She gave me permission!"

"Mrs. Eleanor Vance submitted full forensic digital evidence, bank records, and email header logs proving that you forged her digital signature on twenty-four separate corporate wire overrides," Agent Jenkins stated coldly. "Furthermore, your former CFO accomplice, Bradley Cooper, signed a full confession two days ago detailing your exact kickback scheme."

"Bradley... Bradley snitched on me?!" Evan whimpered, his knees buckling beneath him.

"You have the right to remain silent," the LAPD officer said, stepping forward, grabbing Evan’s arms, and twisting them behind his back.

The heavy steel handcuffs clicked over Evan’s wrists with a harsh, final sound.

"No! Wait! Call Claire!" Evan shrieked as he was dragged down the carpeted hallway of the law firm. "Call my wife! She'll tell you! Eleanor is crazy! Call Claire!"

"Mrs. Miller signed a formal affidavit of cooperation with the federal prosecutor’s office this morning, Mr. Miller," Marcus informed him smoothly as Evan was led past the glass windows. "She is currently serving as the state's key witness against you."

Evan’s screams echoed down the elevator shaft as he was forced into the police cruiser waiting on Wilshire Boulevard below.

In the quiet office, Marcus picked up his phone and dialed my private line.

"It's done, Eleanor," Marcus said softly. "Evan is in federal custody. Bail has been set at two million dollars, cash only. He won't be coming out for a very long time."

I sat in my office on the thirty-eighth floor of the Vance Logistics Tower, looking out over the city of Los Angeles.

"Thank you, Marcus," I said quietly. "How is Claire?"

"I checked in with Miguel at the warehouse thirty minutes ago," Marcus replied, a warm smile in his voice. "Claire just finished a ten-hour shift. She scanned nine hundred boxes today without a single error. Miguel said she's the hardest worker on Shift B."

A faint, tender smile touched my lips.

"Good," I whispered. "Tell Miguel to give her an extra thirty minutes of overtime tomorrow."
