Chapter 6 - The Steel Net

The federal raid on the harbor offices was not a coincidence. It was a calculated strike designed to break Dante Caruso’s grip on Baltimore once and for all.
For three days, the estate was under siege—not by mobsters with Tommy guns, but by men in dark blue jackets with yellow 'FBI' lettering stenciled across their backs. They drove unmarked black vans, set up temporary command trailers near the main security gates, and served subpoena after subpoena on Dante’s corporate entities.
Dante was virtually invisible during those seventy-two hours. He was locked in the main house study with a team of six high-priced defense attorneys, sifting through mountains of financial ledgers, shipping manifests, and digital drives.
I stayed at the guest cottage, keeping Marcus indoors and ensuring Titan remained calm despite the constant stream of strange vehicles passing through the iron gates.
On the third evening, the storm finally passed, leaving behind a clear, cool night lit by a brilliant silver full moon.
I was sitting on the back patio of the cottage, watching the moon reflections dance across the dark water of the bay, when footsteps echoed on the stone path.
Dante walked out of the shadows.
He looked utterly exhausted. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his tie was gone, and deep shadow circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. But when his amber gaze landed on me sitting in the moonlight, the tension in his broad shoulders visibly eased.
He walked over to my bench and sat down beside me without a word, pulling me directly into his lap and burying his face in the crook of my neck.
I didn't ask questions. I simply wrapped my arms around his waist, holding him tight, running my fingers through his dark hair as he let out a long, bone-deep sigh.
"They found nothing," Dante murmured against my skin after a long silence. "Because there was nothing illegal in the shipping records they seized. Every container of medical supplies, every shipment of industrial steel, was fully legitimate."
"Then why did they raid you?" I asked softly.
"Because someone paid a low-level clerk in the city zoning office to forge an anonymous tip alleging human trafficking," Dante said, his voice laced with bitter fury. "The prosecutor had to act on it. It was designed to embarrass me publicly and freeze my bank accounts for forty-eight hours."
"Who did it?"
Dante pulled back slightly, looking into my eyes. "Dominic Moretti. It was his retaliation for the Pier 42 incident."
A cold pit opened in my stomach. "Dante... if he’s using federal prosecutors now, what comes next?"
"Violence," Dante answered bluntly. "Dominic is running out of options. The commission in New York is putting pressure on him because he lost fifty thousand dollars to us. When a man like Dominic gets desperate, he stops thinking about strategy and starts thinking about blood."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, sleek black smartphone that wasn't connected to the estate network.
"I am sending Marcus and you to my villa in Upstate New York tomorrow morning," Dante announced quietly.
I stiffened in his lap, pulling back to look at him. "No."
"Rosalie—"
"I said no, Dante!" I snapped, my eyes flashing with anger. "You can't just ship me away every time things get dangerous! I am not a helpless piece of fine china!"
"This isn't about pride, Rosalie!" Dante’s voice rose, his amber eyes blazing with protective rage. "Dominic knows you were at the harbor! He knows Titan listens to you! If he wants to hit me where it hurts most, he won't come at my guards—he will come for you!"
"Then let him come!" I yelled back, grabbing his collar. "You gave me a veterinary suite! You gave my brother a future! You gave Titan a life! Do you think I'm going to run away to New York and leave you here to face a war alone?"
Dante stared at me, genuinely stunned by my outburst. His lips parted, but no words came out.
"I survived six weeks of having my reputation dragged through the dirt by rich bullies in Dundalk," I said, my voice shaking with raw emotion. "I survived standing in front of Jimmy Moretti’s gun. I am staying right here, Dante Caruso. With you."
Dante stared into my eyes for three long seconds. Slowly, the anger in his expression dissolved, replaced by a look of such profound, overwhelming adoration that it took my breath away.
"You are incredible," he whispered, his hands coming up to frame my face. "Completely, terrifyingly incredible."
He pulled my mouth down to his in a fierce, possessive kiss that tasted of fire, copper, and absolute devotion. I wrapped my legs around his waist, pulling him deeper into the kiss, feeling the hard line of his body pressing against mine.
"If you stay," Dante breathed against my lips, his thumb tracing my jawline, "you stay in the main house. In my bedroom. Where I can see you, touch you, and protect you twenty-four hours a day."
May you like
"Deal," I whispered back, my hands sliding beneath his shirt to feel the hot skin of his back. "As long as Titan sleeps at the foot of the bed."
Dante let out a breathless laugh against my neck. "The dog gets the rug. You get the bed. And I get you."
