Chapter 10 - The Harvest Table

A year after the truth came out, autumn returned to Virginia.

The oak tree in the backyard turned brilliant shades of crimson and gold. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of burning wood and sweet apples.

To celebrate the official completion of the house restoration and the one-year anniversary of my new business, I hosted a harvest dinner on the back lawn.

A long wooden table was set under the oak tree, decorated with white candles, fresh autumn flowers, and bowls of roasted vegetables.

Sitting around the table were the people who formed my true, chosen family: Grandpa George, sitting at the head of the table in his brown cardigan; Rachel Kim, who had become my closest friend and business legal partner; Caleb Miller, who was now helping me manage local restoration projects; several grateful clients; and neighbors who had supported us through the storm.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across the lawn, I stood up from my chair and raised my glass.

"Two years ago," I spoke softly, looking around at the smiling faces, "I thought I was spending money to save a home. I thought home was a set of walls, a roof, and a piece of paper."

I looked over at Grandpa George, who was smiling warmly at me.

"I learned the hard way that a home isn't built with money or maintained with lies," I continued, my voice steady and full of peace. "A home is built on truth, protected by integrity, and filled with people who love you unconditionally. To truth, to freedom, and to real family."

"To real family!" everyone echoed, raising their glasses into the evening air.

The clinking of glass rang cleanly across the lawn, followed by warm laughter, good food, and the deep, unshakeable peace of a man who had reclaimed his life from the ashes of deceit.

As the stars began to twinkle through the branches of the old oak tree, I sat back down beside Grandpa, took a deep breath of the cool night air, and knew that I was finally, completely home.
