Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Raid

By Monday at 9:00 AM, the financial district of Chicago was reeling.
Ethan had kept his word. Eleanor had officially withdrawn the emergency custody petition at 11:30 PM on Friday night, but it was far too late to stop the momentum I had set in motion.
Over the weekend, Vance Global Digital—backed by three major private equity partners who had been waiting for a chance to break the Montgomery monopoly—had quietly purchased forty percent of Montgomery Global's distressed bonds from offshore creditors.
Now, I stood in the marble lobby of the Montgomery Tower downtown.
I wore a tailored white suit, my dark hair styled in a sleek, sharp bob. Beside me walked Sarah, my head legal counsel, and Marcus. Behind us walked four junior attorneys carrying thick black leather briefcases.
We took the private executive elevator directly to the top floor—the floor where Eleanor Montgomery had ruled supreme for thirty years.
When the elevator doors opened into the glass-walled boardroom corridor, Eleanor’s senior executive assistant gasped, scrambling out of her chair.
"Ms. Vance! You... you can't be here! The board is in an emergency session!"
"I know," I smiled brightly. "That’s exactly why I’m here."
Without knocking, Marcus pushed open the heavy mahogany doors to the main boardroom.
Inside, sixteen board members were gathered around a massive oak table. Eleanor Montgomery sat at the head of the table, looking pale and exhausted, surrounded by her financial advisors. Ethan sat at the far end of the table, wearing a dark suit, his expression unreadable.
Every head turned as I strolled into the room.
"Maya?" Eleanor gasped, rising from her chair, her eyes blazing with fury. "What is the meaning of this intrusion?! Security!"
"Security won't be necessary, Mrs. Montgomery," my lead attorney said smoothly, stepping forward and laying a thick stack of certified legal documents in the center of the oak table. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, Vance Global Digital holds forty-two percent of Montgomery Global’s primary debt structure, along with fifteen percent of equity voting shares acquired from secondary markets."
A collective gasp went through the board members. Several executives immediately began frantically flipping through the documents.
"That's impossible!" Eleanor shouted, her hands shaking as she grabbed a copy. "Where did you get the capital?!"
"I told you five years ago, Eleanor," I said, leaning over the table, resting my hands flat against the polished wood. "You assumed because I didn't come from money, I didn't know how to make it. Vance Global generates more cash flow in a single quarter than your legacy firm has seen in three years."
I stood up straight, looking around the room at the terrified board members.
"Your company is insolvent," I declared, my voice echoing off the glass walls. "You have twenty-four hours to meet your bond debt obligations, or Vance Global will execute its contractual right to convert that debt into controlling equity shares."
"You... you're trying to take my company!" Eleanor stammered, sinking back into her chair as if she had been physically struck.
"No, Eleanor," I corrected her with a cold, beautiful smile. "I'm not trying. I already did."
Then, I looked down the long table at Ethan.
Ethan sat quietly. He didn't look angry. He didn't look shocked. In fact, a faint, proud smile touched the corner of his lips as he looked at me.
Slowly, Ethan stood up from his seat.
He reached into his jacket, pulled out an official document, and slid it down the table toward his mother.
"What is this, Ethan?" Eleanor asked, her voice barely a whisper.
"My formal resignation as Chief Operating Officer," Ethan said clearly. "And the transfer of my twenty-five percent voting shares to Vance Global Digital."
Eleanor’s face turned gray. "Ethan... you... you destroyed us..."
"No, Mother," Ethan said, looking his mother in the eye with complete detachment. "You destroyed us the day you decided that money was more important than family. Maya built an empire out of love for her sons. You ruined ours out of greed."

Ethan walked away from the table, stepping up to my side.
"The board is yours, Maya," Ethan said softly. "Do whatever you need to do to fix it."
