Chapter 7 - The Secret Documents

The following morning, the legal landscape shifted dramatically. Following Brandon’s arrest for domestic burglary and felony harassment, a search warrant was executed on his mother’s private residence in Coronado—the location where forensic investigators believed he had hidden his secondary financial backups.
I accompanied Detective Harris—the same young gate guard who had since transitioned into a liaison position with the Navy’s internal security team—into the basement of the elder Mrs. Whitaker's home.
"We found a false panel in the wine cellar, Mrs. Sterling," Harris said, using his flashlight to illuminate a dark, stone cavity behind a rack of vintage bordeaux. Inside the cavity sat a military-grade, encrypted tactical data case. "Our cyber unit managed to bypass the biometric lock using a digital mirror program. You need to see what’s inside."
We opened the case on a workspace table in the center of the room. Inside were three high-capacity external hard drives, a stack of classified naval logistics blueprints, and a black leather journal filled with handwritten notes in Brandon’s distinct, precise script.
I flipped through the pages, my eyes widening as the true scope of his treachery became apparent. Brandon wasn't just embezzling procurement funds; he was selling proprietary naval logistics data to foreign maritime syndicates—specifically, commercial shipping competitors based in Southeast Asia who were desperate to bypass the strict regulatory bottlenecks managed by Sterling Maritime.
"He was corporate-spying on my family," I realized, a cold sweat breaking out across my neck. "He was using his naval clearance to access our international shipping manifests, mapping out our supply lines, and selling the data to our rivals so they could undercut our freight rates in the Pacific."
"It’s worse than that, Evie," Christian said, walking down the basement stairs with a grim expression, a cell phone pressed to his ear. He hung up and looked at me. "The feds just confirmed the data routing. Brandon was leaking the scheduling protocols for US Navy escort vessels protecting commercial shipping lanes in the South China Sea. He was putting American sailors’ lives at risk just to validate the market data he was selling to his foreign handlers."

The revelation transformed the case from a standard domestic and financial scandal into an act of profound, high-level military espionage. The defense procurement fraud was just the tip of the iceberg; Brandon Whitaker had engaged in a systematic betrayal of his country, his uniform, and the family that had fed him for a decade.
"This changes everything," Detective Harris whispered, his face pale as he reviewed the classification stamps on the documents. "This isn't a local court-martial anymore. This is a federal treason indictment. The Department of Justice is going to take over the prosecution."
