CHAPTER 4 — WHEN FAMILY BECOMES A BOUNDARY
The formal mediation meeting took place in a quiet office.
Neutral walls.
Neutral chairs.
Neutral silence that didn’t feel neutral at all.
Phyllis sat on one side.
Mallerie on the other.
Kendra refused to attend.
Cowardice or self-preservation—it was unclear.
The mediator began gently.
“This is about ensuring safe family interaction going forward.”
Phyllis immediately interrupted.
“There was nothing unsafe.”
Mallerie didn’t react.
She simply placed the police report on the table.
And waited.
Silence followed.
Long enough for reality to settle in.
The mediator read it.
Then looked up.
“Calling emergency services for behavioral discipline is not appropriate use,” she said carefully.
Phyllis stiffened.
“It worked,” she insisted.
Mallerie’s voice was quiet.
“It terrified my child.”
That was the difference.
Not behavior.
Impact.
A structured boundary plan was proposed:
No unsupervised contact
No disciplinary authority
No discussion of punishment or threats
All interactions monitored or documented
Phyllis refused.
“I will not be treated like a stranger in my own family.”
Mallerie answered calmly:
“Then don’t behave like one.”

Outside, she tried one last time.
