Chapter 5 - The Vance Dynasty's Shadow

By eight o'clock Saturday morning, the Raleigh police had executed a search warrant on the Vance estate based on the video evidence from Ben's camera and the contents of the blue box, which I had delivered directly to the district attorney’s office.
I sat in the office of Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator whose desk was piled high with high-profile corporate and political files. Beside me sat Marcus, the social worker, looking grimmer than ever.
"We picked up your wife at her mother's residence an hour ago," Detective Miller said, setting down a cup of black coffee. "She’s currently held at the Wake County Detention Center on charges of felony child abuse and contributing to the injury of a minor. Her brother, Arthur Vance, has already filed for an emergency bail hearing, but given the severity of the video evidence, the judge is holding her until Monday morning."
"And Margaret?" I asked, my voice hollow.
"Margaret Vance is a slicker fish," Miller sighed, leaning back in his leather chair. "The documents you found in that blue box show a pattern of institutional cover-up and potentially illegal medical standard coercion from eighteen years ago, but the statute of limitations on the adoption fraud has likely expired. However, there is an active investigation into witness tampering and child intimidation based on what she said to you in the entryway of your home."
"I don't care about the politics, Detective," I said, my voice hardening. "I want to know where Rachel is. If my wife has another daughter out there—if Ella has a sister who was stolen from this family—I am going to find her."
Marcus leaned forward, sliding a file across the desk. "I spent the morning tracing the adoption agency listed in the Vance documents, Mark. The agency was called 'Cradle of Hope,' and it was shut down in 2012 following an investigation into illegal cash-for-placement schemes involving wealthy North Carolina families. The children were often placed with families out of state to ensure the biological mothers could never track them."
"Where is the paper trail?"
"It ends in Nashville, Tennessee," Marcus said.
My heart skipped a beat. Nashville. The city I had just spent five days visiting for my logistics job. The city I had flown back from early.
"The adoptive parents listed on the unregistered waivers were a couple named David and Ellen Cross," Marcus continued. "They passed away in a car accident five years ago. But according to social services records, their daughter, Rachel Cross, now seventeen, is currently enrolled in a residential arts academy just outside the Nashville city limits."
I stood up, my resolution solidifying into an unbreakable iron rod. "I’m going to Nashville. I’m going to bring Ella with me—she’s safe with me under the emergency protection order. We are going to find her sister, and we are going to dismantle every single lie Margaret Vance ever built."

"Mark, be careful," Detective Miller warned. "Arthur Vance is preparing a massive counter-suit. He’s going to claim you stole those documents from the closet, that the video is a deep-fake created by your neighbor, and that you're using this to gain full custody of Ella and her mother's trust fund."
"Let him try," I said, looking out the window at the morning sky. "He’s an attorney. I’m a logistics expert. He knows how to manipulate words, but I know how to track down exactly what has been hidden."
