Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary

That Sunday evening, our family sat together on the wide wooden porch of our new home in the country.

The sunset was spectacular—a deep, blazing canvas of orange, purple, and gold stretching across the open Texas sky.

Toby and Maya were playing in the grass with a golden retriever puppy we had adopted two months ago, their laughter echoing through the quiet valley.

Clara sat beside me on the porch swing, wearing a cozy wool sweater, leaning her head against my shoulder as the cool evening breeze rustled the oak leaves above us.

I looked down at her face—at the faint, barely visible silver line near her temple where the scar had healed—and felt a profound, overwhelming sense of gratitude.

We had survived the dark morning. We had survived the lies, the hospital room, the courtrooms, and the broken family bonds.

We had built a life on light, honesty, and uncompromising love.

"What are you thinking about?" Clara whispered softly, reaching up to intertwine her fingers with mine.

May you like

I smiled, pulling her closer into the warmth of my side as our children ran up the porch steps, laughing and shouting for fresh apple juice.

"I'm thinking," I said, looking out at the golden horizon, "that we're finally home."
