Chapter 4 - The Motel Room Reality

The Extended Stay Motel off Highway 9 smelled of stale grease, old carpet, and industrial bleach.
In Room 114, sitting on the edge of a stained queen-sized mattress, Ryan Vance was holding his head in his hands. His phone lay on the cheap particle-board nightstand, completely dead. The screen was cracked from when he had thrown it against the wall three hours earlier after realizing every single one of his credit cards had been declined at the front desk.
Beside him, Vivian was frantically going through her handbag, dumping dusty coins, old receipts, and two half-empty gift cards onto the bed.
"There has to be something in your emergency account, Ryan!" she cried out, her voice thin and raspy from a night of non-stop weeping. "What about your stock options?! What about the offshore account you talked about at Christmas?!"
"It was all under the Sterling trust, Mom!" Ryan roared, standing up and knocking a plastic ice bucket off the table. "Everything! The stock, the corporate credit lines, the lease on the house—it was all tied to Sabrina's primary signature! I didn't own a single share of Vance Global! She just let me use the title!"
"She's a monster!" Vivian screamed, clutching her chest with a wrinkled, trembling hand. "A cold, heartless monster! After everything we did for her! We took her mother into our home! We gave that old woman a roof over her head!"
"We treated her like a maid, Mom!" Ryan snapped, his composure completely collapsing as the reality of his situation closed in around him like a vice. "You made her wash my shirts! You made her clean the floors when her hands were so swollen she couldn't pick up a glass! Sabrina saw the bruises!"
"She fell!" Vivian lied reflexively, her eyes darting around the dingy room as if looking for an audience to convince. "She was clumsy! I only held her arm to steady her!"
"The doctor took pictures, Mom!" Ryan yelled, pacing the short distance between the bed and the bathroom door. "Do you think Sabrina is stupid?! She had a forensic medical team at that house before we even made it to the taxi! She's going to destroy us!"
A sharp, heavy knock suddenly rattled the flimsy wooden door of Room 114.
Vivian froze, her hands hovering over her pile of loose change. "Who is that? Is it the hotel manager? Tell him we'll have the cash by noon!"
Ryan walked slowly toward the door, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He pulled back the thin yellow curtain on the window.
Standing on the outdoor walkway were three uniformed police officers and a plainclothes detective holding a blue folder. Behind them, parked in the gravel lot beside the highway, were two police cruisers with their emergency lights flashing silently against the gray sky.
Ryan’s knees buckled. He stepped back from the window, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps.
"Ryan?" Vivian whispered, her face pale with terror. "Who is it?"
The door was kicked once, hard enough to make the lock rattle in its frame.
"Police Department!" a loud, authoritative voice boomed from the walkway. "Ryan Vance! Vivian Vance! Open the door immediately! We have warrants for your arrest!"
Vivian let out a sharp, piercing shriek, dropping her purse to the floor. "Arrest?! For what?! We haven't done anything wrong! Ryan, do something!"
Ryan couldn't move. He stood frozen in the middle of the dingy room as the latch clicked from the outside. The hotel manager unlocked the door, and three officers stepped inside, their hands resting on their holstered sidearms.
Detective Harris stepped forward, opening the blue folder.
"Ryan Vance," Detective Harris read flatly, looking at the rumpled man in the wrinkled linen shirt. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and domestic assault in the second degree. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Before Ryan could even extend his hands, Officer Miller grabbed his arms, pulling them behind his back and clicking a pair of cold, steel handcuffs over his wrists.
"Wait! No! You can't do this!" Vivian screamed, lunging toward the officer. "He's the CEO of Vance Global! This is a mistake! His wife is doing this because she's crazy!"
Detective Harris turned his attention to Vivian, pulling a second paper from the file.
"Vivian Vance," the detective stated cold-bloodedly. "You are being taken into custody under a criminal summons for secondary elder abuse and witness intimidation regarding the injuries sustained by Margaret Sterling. Officers, secure her."
A female officer stepped forward, grabbing Vivian’s arm and pinning her gently but firmly against the wall. Within thirty seconds, both mother and son were handcuffed, stripped of their remaining dignity, and led out onto the concrete walkway of the Extended Stay Motel in full view of the truck drivers and motel guests standing below.

As Ryan was pushed into the back seat of the police cruiser, he looked up at the sky.
The gray winter clouds were breaking, allowing a single beam of cold, bright sunlight to hit the hills in the distance—the high, gated hills where the Vanguard Estate stood, untouchable, silent, and entirely beyond his reach.
