Chapter 4 - The Clean Sweep

By 05:00 AM, the mansion was purged.

Brenda Miller—formerly known as Bianca Whitmore—was led down the snow-covered front steps in steel handcuffs, her luxury velvet robe dragging through the slush, her cries echoing uselessly against the pine trees as state troopers shoved her into the back of a four-wheel-drive police cruiser.

Her personal assistant, her DJ, and the three local catering managers who had assisted in diverting estate funds were all placed under federal holding orders pending grand jury indictments.

Ethan stood on the front porch, watching the red tail lights of the police procession disappear into the roaring white curtain of the mountain storm.

Beside him stood Dr. Sarah Jenkins, a world-renowned pediatric trauma specialist whom Ethan had flown in via private medical transport from Denver two hours earlier.

“How are they, Sarah?” Ethan asked, his voice rough.

Dr. Jenkins pulled her medical coat tighter against the wind. “Physical condition: mild to moderate malnutrition, severe vitamin D deficiency, and early-stage localized hypothermia in their extremities. If they had spent another forty-eight hours in that wing, Ethan... you would be preparing four funerals.”

Ethan closed his eyes. His jaw muscles clenched so tight he felt his teeth creak.

“And psychologically?” he asked softly.

“They’re terrified,” Sarah said honestly. “They’ve been subjected to six months of systematic psychological conditioning. They were told that their worth was tied to their weight, that their father abandoned them because they weren't 'good enough,' and that any attempt to seek help would result in them being sent to an orphanage. It’s going to take months—maybe years—of intensive, loving therapy to undo the damage.”

“They will have whatever it takes,” Ethan swore. “Every resource in the world.”

“Money won't fix this, Ethan,” Sarah warned gently, placing a hand on his forearm. “They don't need another team of high-priced specialists living in the guest house while you manage your global assets from Manhattan. They need you. They need to see their father every single morning when they wake up and every single night before they close their eyes.”

Ethan looked out at the dark pine forest surrounding his mountain estate.

For seven hundred days, he had told himself that his brutal eighty-hour work weeks were his duty. He had convinced himself that building a multi-billion-dollar corporate empire was the ultimate expression of love for Clara’s children. He had treated his home life like a corporation, delegating the most sacred responsibility on earth—raising his daughters—to third-party contractors and a woman he had married out of convenience and loneliness.

“I’m resigning,” Ethan said quietly.

Sarah blinked. “What?”

“At 09:00 AM, when Wall Street opens, I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of Whitmore Systems,” Ethan declared. His voice was no longer that of a corporate shark or an angry husband. It was the voice of a father who had finally woken up. “I am appointing an interim management board. I am stepping away from every board seat, every venture deal, every public appearance.”

He turned and looked through the grand glass doors of the mansion toward the grand staircase.

“My job for the next ten years is right here.”
