Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the Sanctuary

Two months later, spring had arrived in full bloom.
The lake house in Lake Geneva was completely transformed. Gone were the gloomy, closed curtains and sour air. The large floor-to-ceiling windows were thrown open, allowing the warm, sweet breeze from the lake to fill the bright, freshly painted living room.
Outside on the sunlit back deck overlooking the water, Margaret sat in a comfortable armchair, wrapped in a light cashmere shawl. She was smiling, sipping fresh orange juice, while her dog—a cheerful golden retriever puppy I had bought her for her eighty-third birthday—barked happily at the waves hitting the dock.
I walked out onto the deck carrying a tray of fresh croissants and fruit.
"Here you go, Grandma," I said, setting the tray down on the glass table.
"Thank you, darling," Margaret said, her dark eyes sparkling with vitality and peace. "You know, Evelyn, every morning I wake up in this house, I feel like I'm living in a dream. Three months ago, I thought I was going to die in that dark back room."
"You are safe now, Margaret," I said, sitting down beside her and taking her hand. "This house is yours, fully paid for, with a permanent security team stationed at the main gate."
"And your firm?" she asked.
"Better than ever," I smiled. "After the news broke about how our forensic team uncovered an international banking fraud ring and protected your estate, we've been inundated with new corporate compliance clients. We had to hire eight new investigators last week."
Nina walked out onto the deck, wearing dark sunglasses and carrying a leather folder.
"Good morning, ladies," Nina greeted brightly, pulling up a chair. "I brought the final court decree documents."
"What decree?" Margaret asked.
Nina opened the folder and handed a gold-sealed document to Margaret.
"This is the official court order dissolving the Hale Family Trust," Nina explained. "All assets—including the lake house, the three commercial buildings in Chicago, and the remaining investment portfolios—have been legally consolidated into the Margaret & Evelyn Foundation for Victims of Elder Abuse."
Margaret's eyes filled with tears of gratitude as she read the gold lettering on the document. "A foundation in our names... Oh, Evelyn..."
"We've already funded our first three emergency shelters in Illinois," I added gently. "We provide legal representation, medical care, and safe housing for elderly individuals who are being exploited or abused by greedy relatives."

"You turned our tragedy into a sanctuary for others," Margaret whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek. "My late husband would be so proud of you, Evelyn. You are the daughter I always wished I had."
We held hands, looking out over the sparkling blue waters of the lake as the golden retriever trotted over, resting its head on Margaret's knee.
