Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Tomorrow

One year later.

The morning sun washed over the private dock behind our Kiawah Island villa in brilliant sweeps of pink, orange, and glittering gold. The air was crisp, carrying the sweet scent of marsh grass and salt water.

I stood at the end of the wooden dock, holding a warm cup of coffee, watching the gentle waves lap against the pilings.

Behind me, I heard soft footsteps running down the wooden planks.

"Daddy! Look! Look what I found!" Lily shouted, skittering to a stop beside me. She was wearing a brightly colored sun hat, holding up a large, perfectly polished pink sea shell she had found on the beach.

"That is the most beautiful shell in the whole ocean, sweetie," I smiled, dropping to one knee to examine her treasure.

"Mommy said we can put it in the garden near the flowers!" Lily giggled, hugging my neck tightly before running back toward the lawn where her golden retriever was waiting.

I stood up slowly, watching her go.

Clara walked down the dock toward me, wearing a soft cream sweater, carrying her own mug of tea. The morning wind gently rustled her hair. She looked radiant, peaceful, completely healed—a woman who had walked through the valley of shadow and emerged as a beacon of strength.

She stepped up beside me, slipping her arm around my waist, resting her head lightly against my shoulder as we looked out at the vast, endless horizon of the sea.

"What are you thinking, Michael?" she asked softly.

I wrapped my arm around her, pulling her close against my side, feeling the steady, warm beat of her heart against mine.

"I was thinking that for a long time, I thought wealth was built in corporate boardrooms, stock shares, and bank balances," I said, looking down at her green eyes. "But looking at you... looking at Lily... I realize that true wealth is sitting right here in front of me."

Clara smiled—a radiant, breathtaking smile that lit up the morning light. "We built a good life, Michael."

"We built a safe life, Clara," I corrected gently, kissing her forehead. "And no one will ever break it again."

We stood together on the edge of the water, holding each other tight, watching our daughter laugh and play in the golden sunlight of a brand-new day—a family united, unbroken, and forever free.
