Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Archives

The rain began to fall in heavy, rhythmic sheets as I pulled my truck into the dark parking lot of Vanguard Logistics Headquarters at 11:30 PM. The massive glass-and-steel building towered against the night sky, looking like a fortress of glass and corporate greed.
I checked my pocket. The flash drive was secure. On my phone, Detective Miller was monitoring my location via GPS, ready to move in with a state police tactical unit the moment I confirmed the master files were secured.
I scanned my keycard at the side employee entrance. The light blinked red for a sickening second, then flashed green. The heavy steel door clicked open.
The building was silent, lit only by dim blue emergency lights. The smell of floor wax and ozone hung heavy in the air. I kept my head down, avoiding the main security cameras as I navigated the familiar hallways toward the basement archives where the primary physical servers were housed.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Every shadow seemed to move. I kept picturing Clara in this building—working late at her desk, spotting the fraudulent numbers, realizing the danger she was in, and trying to protect our family.
I reached the server room door. It required a double authorization: a biometrics thumbprint and an administrative passcode.
I placed my thumb on the glass scanner. Accepted.
I typed in Clara’s administrative code—the one she had written in the back of her recipe book at home just in case something ever happened to her.
Access Granted.
The heavy reinforced door slid open with a soft hiss. The server room was freezing, packed with rows of glowing black towers humming loudly in the dark.
I rushed to the central console, pulled out a military-grade data cloner I had grabbed from my work locker, and plugged it into the main server rack. The progress bar illuminated the screen: 0%... 5%... 12%...
Suddenly, the overhead lights slammed on, blinding me in a harsh fluorescent glare.
"I must admit, Alex... I expected you to be at the funeral home choosing a headstone."
I spun around.
Standing at the entrance of the server room was Mr. Vance. He was impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his silver hair neatly combed, flanked by two towering men in tactical jackets—his private security detail.
In Vance's right hand was a small, sleek silenced pistol.
"Mr. Vance," I said, stepping in front of the server console to block the cloning device from view. "You sent me away."
"I gave you a job to do, Alex. A very lucrative job," Vance said smoothly, taking a slow step into the room. "If you had just stayed in the field for another twelve hours, everything would have been resolved cleanly. Your wife's unfortunate 'depression' would have been buried, your brother's debts would have been cleared, and you would have received a very generous promotion for your loyalty."
"My wife was murdered," I said through gritted teeth.
Vance sighed softly, as if discussing a minor shipping delay. "Derek is an idiot. I told him to simply retrieve her laptop while she was out. I didn't tell him to bring your mother along, and I certainly didn't tell him to lose his temper when Clara caught him in her bedroom."
"So you admit it," I said, keeping my eye on the progress bar behind me: 68%... 74%...
"Admit it?" Vance chuckled quietly. "Alex, who am I admitting it to? A grieving husband who broke into a secure corporate facility in the middle of the night? The narrative is so simple: Alex Carter, driven mad by grief, attacked company security and had to be neutralized."
Vance raised the silenced pistol, aiming it directly at my chest.

Behind me, the console emitted a soft, high-pitched BEEP.
