Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

By the second week of October, the leaves in Briar County had turned into a brilliant, burning crimson. My leg was getting stronger every day; the local physical therapist down at the VA clinic had me working on a specialized resistance routine, and I could now walk across the kitchen without using my cane for support.

I stood in the old barn, watching two inspectors from the Environmental Protection Agency and the State Revenue Service examine the hidden transit tracking station Daniel had installed behind our hay lofts.

"They were smart, Captain Vance," the lead inspector said, shining his light on a series of modified weight sensors buried under the floorboards. "They were running the trucks through here at three in the morning, bypassing the state sensors entirely. They saved nearly two million dollars in commercial road taxes over the last four years alone."

"It’s not smart if you leave the deeds under a soldier's name," I said, leaning against the wooden railing.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a restricted number. I picked it up, expecting another screaming call from Daniel.

Instead, a woman's voice came through the line, low, trembling, and entirely broken.

"Rachel?"

I recognized the voice after a moment of silence. It was Brooke, the woman who had been standing by my fireplace the night I came home—the woman Daniel had claimed was just a "family friend helping with the transition."

"What do you want, Brooke?" I asked coldly.

"He lied to me, Rachel," she sobbed into the phone. "Daniel told me you were going to stay in the hospital for the next year. He told me he owned the farm and that we were going to move out there after the divorce was settled. He... he used my name on the import licenses for the antique shop. The federal investigators just came to my apartment. They said I’m facing five years for conspiracy!"

"You stood in my living room while his mother threw my daughter's clothes into the mud, Brooke," I said, my voice showing no mercy. "You wanted my life? You can have the man who came with it. But you get the prison sentence too."

"Rachel, please! I can tell them everything! I have the private emails between Daniel and his mother showing they planned to forge your signature on the property transfer if your father didn't sign it before he died! I have the digital copies of the fake deeds!"

I paused, looking out the barn door at Lily, who was playing with Mr. Callahan’s old golden retriever in the autumn leaves.

"Call Major Sarah Jenkins at the Fort Meade legal office," I told her. "If your documents match the ledgers my father left me, she might talk to the prosecutor about your bail. If not, I suggest you get used to wearing something other than silk dresses."

I hung up, a deep sense of finality settling over me. The circle was closing, and Daniel Whitaker was running out of places to hide.
