Chapter 10 - The Coolest Summer

One year later.
July returned to the city, bringing with it another scorching summer heatwave. The thermometer outside the kitchen window read 104∘F (40∘C).
Inside the house on Elm Street, it was a heavenly 66∘F (19∘C).
The house was filled with laughter and the cheerful clinking of glasses. Sarah was hosting a Sunday brunch for her ER team to celebrate her one-year anniversary as ER Nurse Manager.
Brenda sat on the plush sofa, holding a glass of chilled mimosa, while two junior nurses laughed over photos on their phones. The living room was bright, filled with sunlight filtering through sheer white curtains, plants thriving in every corner, and the smooth, quiet hum of the high-tech air conditioning unit keeping the entire house perfectly cool.
“Sarah, your house is an absolute paradise,” Brenda said, leaning back into the soft cushions. “I swear, I never want to leave.”
“You’re welcome anytime, Brenda,” Sarah smiled, bringing out a platter of fresh fruit and pastries from the kitchen.
Sarah wore a light linen summer dress, her hair down, her skin glowing with health and peace.
After her friends left late in the afternoon, Sarah stood on her front porch, holding a cold cup of iced coffee. The hot summer wind rustled the leaves of the oak trees in her yard, but as she stepped back inside her home and closed the door, the heavy heat disappeared instantly behind the solid, secure frame.
She walked up to her hallway desk, where her father’s old brown envelope sat frame-mounted on the wall as a reminder of her journey. Beside it was a small note she had written to herself the night she moved back in:
Kindness without courage is just surrender.

Sarah smiled, taking a sip of her iced drink.
She sat down in her comfortable armchair, picked up a book she had been wanting to read for months, and leaned back into the cool, soothing silence of her own home—a home where no one would ever turn off her peace again.
