Chapter 7 - The Grand Gala

Thursday evening arrived. The Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House Hotel was decorated with crystal chandeliers, silk drapes, and towering floral arrangements. Over two hundred of Chicago’s high-society elite—judges, business executives, politicians, and socialites—were gathered for the Heritage Society’s Annual Charity Gala.

Among them was Marcus Sterling and several members of my firm's board of directors, looking uncomfortable as they chatted near the champagne bar.

Evelyn Vance made her grand entry at 7:30 PM.

She was an absolute master of performance art. She was wearing a muted, dark grey dress that looked intentionally worn, paired with a pair of cheap orthopedic shoes. She was leaning heavily on a wooden cane, moving with painful slowness, letting out tiny gasps of pain with every step.

Immediately, a swarm of socialite women—including Mrs. Higgins, the leader of the society—rushed to her side, offering supportive arms and comforting pats on the shoulder.

“Oh, Evelyn, darling! You shouldn't be standing!” Mrs. Higgins cooed, leading her toward the main table near the stage. “We saw your video! It is an absolute outrage what your son did to you! To turn out his own mother for that fragile, ungrateful girl!”

Evelyn dabs her eyes with a lace handkerchief, producing a few well-timed tears. “Thank you, Beatrice... thank you all. It breaks my heart. I sacrificed my youth for Alex... and to be thrown into a cold motel at my age... I just don't know how a child could become so heartless.”

Several women wiped away tears, glaring across the room as if expecting me to barge in with a club.

“Don't worry, Evelyn,” Mrs. Higgins declared loudly, ensuring Marcus Sterling and the board members nearby could hear. “We have already sent a formal petition to his company. A man who treats his mother like trash does not deserve to hold an executive position in this city!”

Evelyn smiled secretly behind her handkerchief. She was enjoying every single second of this. She felt invincible, surrounded by her shield of powerful, wealthy sympathizers.

At 8:15 PM, the president of the Heritage Society took the stage to introduce the charity auction.

“Welcome, ladies and gentlemen,” the president announced into the microphone. “Before we begin our live auction tonight, we have a special presentation. A late submission from one of our most prominent corporate sponsors regarding community ethics and family values.”

Evelyn sat proudly at the front table, taking a delicate sip of water, adjusting her posture to look appropriately frail for the cameras.

Suddenly, the bright crystal chandeliers dimmed. The massive presentation screens flanking both sides of the stage lit up.

The room went quiet, expecting a corporate sponsorship video.

Instead, a crisp, high-definition video feed filled the dual thirty-foot screens. The audio echoed clearly through the state-of-the-art sound system of the ballroom.

The video opened with a shot of my kitchen.

On the screen, Evelyn Vance was seen walking briskly, completely devoid of her cane, moving with ease and energy. She was screaming at Maya, grabbing a heavy wooden broom and smashing it across the counter, inches from Maya’s face.

The entire ballroom gasped.

Mrs. Higgins’s mouth fell wide open. She slowly turned her head to look at Evelyn.

Evelyn’s face turned from smug satisfaction to pure, unadulterated terror. The glass of water slipped from her hands, shattering onto the carpet.

“Stop the video! Turn it off!” Evelyn shrieked, attempting to stand up, but her knees actually buckled this time out of sheer panic. “That’s a fake! That’s AI! Turn it off!”

Nobody turned it off.
