Chapter 5 - The Fall of Vanessa

The public fall of Ethan Bennett was swift and brutal, but Vanessa Vance soon discovered that she was not exempt from the wave of retribution crashing over their shattered lives.

Two days after Ethan’s high-profile firing from Vanguard Capital, Vanessa sat in a trendy coffee shop in Highland Park, wearing oversized dark sunglasses to hide her bloodshot eyes. Her white Mercedes had been repossessed the previous afternoon due to unpaid lease balances Ethan had promised to cover. She was down to her last credit card—one that was dangerously close to its limit.

Opposite her sat her elder sister, Cynthia, who was looking at Vanessa with a mix of pity and exasperation.

"Vanessa, you have to talk to Daniel," Cynthia urged. "He’s freezing all your personal assets through the divorce court. He’s claiming marital misconduct and financial fraud!"

"Daniel is a weak nobody!" Vanessa spat, taking a nervous sip of her iced latte. "He’s being manipulated by Claire! She’s using her uncle’s inheritance to buy everyone off! Ethan assured me his legal team would handle this!"

"Ethan?" Cynthia laughed bitterly. "Vanessa, have you looked at the news today? Ethan was fired for corporate embezzlement! The District Attorney opened an investigation into his expense accounts this morning! He’s facing federal fraud charges!"

Vanessa dropped her straw, her heart hammering against her ribs. "What?"

"Ethan doesn't have a legal team, Vanessa," Cynthia said plainly. "He’s staying in a motel by the airport using a public defender. He’s ruined. And because you signed those shell company papers with him, Daniel’s lawyers are naming you as a co-conspirator!"

Before Vanessa could process her sister’s words, two process servers dressed in dark suits walked into the coffee shop. They scanned the room before walking directly to Vanessa’s table.

"Vanessa Vance?" one of the men asked.

"No," Vanessa lied reflexively, pulling her sunglasses down further. "You have the wrong person."

"You’ve been served," the man said, setting a heavy stack of legal documents directly onto her marble table.

Vanessa stared at the red stamp across the top envelope: SUPREME COURT OF TEXAS – CIVIL DIVISION. PLAINTIFF: CLAIRE BENNETT & VANCE GLOBAL HOLDINGS.

"What is this?" Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling.

"It’s a twenty-million-dollar civil suit for intentional interference with contractual relations, corporate defamation, and civil conspiracy," Cynthia read from the second page, her eyes widening in horror. "Vanessa... Claire is suing you personally for every dime you have."

Vanessa snatched the papers, frantically flipping through the pages. The suit meticulously documented her involvement in Ethan’s scheme to strip Daniel’s business, her unauthorized access to Claire’s private marital residence, and her public statements claiming Claire was a "leech" who lived off Ethan’s income.

Attached to the back was a court summons ordering Vanessa to turn over all high-value gifts received from Ethan Bennett over the last eighteen months—including her diamond bracelets, designer handbags, and custom jewelry—as proceeds of stolen marital property.

"She can't take my jewelry!" Vanessa shrieked, drawing stares from surrounding patrons. "Ethan gave those to me! They were gifts!"

"Gifts purchased with stolen joint marital funds," Cynthia noted grimly. "Vanessa... if you lose this suit, you'll be bankrupt. You’ll lose your house, your savings, everything."

Panicked, Vanessa pulled out her phone and dialed Ethan’s number.

It rang four times before going to voicemail.

She dialed again. This time, Ethan picked up.

"Ethan!" Vanessa cried into the phone. "Claire is suing me! She’s suing me for twenty million dollars! You need to get your lawyers to stop her!"

"I don't have lawyers, Vanessa!" Ethan’s voice came through the speaker, raspy, exhausted, and bitter. He sounded as if he had been drinking. "I’m sitting in a ten-by-ten room listening to highway traffic! I have twelve dollars left in my pocket! Do you have any idea what you did to me?!"

"What I did to you?!" Vanessa gasped. "You told me you were in control! You told me Claire was a pathetic pushover who would sign whatever divorce papers we put in front of her!"

"She wasn't a pushover!" Ethan yelled back, his voice breaking into a harsh laugh. "She was playing us the entire time! She let us dig our own graves, Vanessa! You wanted the house? You wanted the lifestyle? Well, look at us now! We’re broke, we’re being sued, and I’m facing jail time!"

"You useless coward!" Vanessa screamed into the phone. "I ruined my marriage for you!"

"You ruined your marriage because you’re a greedy, shallow snake!" Ethan snapped. "Don't ever call this number again!"

The line went dead.

Vanessa stared at her phone, her chest heaving, tears of anger and panic finally spilling over her designer sunglasses.

She looked across the table at Cynthia, but her sister was already standing up, picking up her handbag.

"Cynthia... where are you going?" Vanessa asked, her voice small and frightened.

May you like

"I’m going home, Vanessa," Cynthia said, looking at her sister with cold disappointment. "I told you two years ago that messing around with Ethan was going to destroy you. You didn't listen. Now you’re on your own."

Cynthia turned and walked out of the coffee shop, leaving Vanessa sitting alone at the table with a stack of legal papers, a mountain of debt, and the overwhelming realization that her glamorous life had vanished into thin air.
