Chapter 6 - THE RECKONING

The room erupted into absolute chaos.

Gasps filled the air. Reporters from the local news stations who had been invited to cover the gala immediately raised their cameras, flashes strobing like lightning across the stage.

"She's lying!" Richard shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria. "She's a disgraced nurse! She was fired for stealing class-two narcotics! She's unstable!"

Marcus Sterling stepped onto the stage, opening the leather binder and handing a thick stack of certified documents directly to the Chairman of the Health Commission sitting in the front row.

"These are the original server logs from St. Jude Memorial, Chairman," Marcus said loudly. "Certified by federal forensic analysts. They prove that Dr. Vance altered medical records, forged drug theft reports, and used illegal surveillance to harass Ms. Parker and her daughter for nearly a year."

The Chairman read the first page, his expression darkening into pure disgust. He looked up at Richard with utter contempt.

"Richard," the Chairman said, his voice cold. "You are relieved of your duties immediately pending a full board review."

"You can't do this!" Richard screamed, backing away from the podium as the two state police officers walked up the stage stairs toward him. "Julian! You're destroying the family name! Think of the company!"

I stepped onto the stage, stopping inches from my cousin. I looked down at him, watching the pathetic, cowardly panic in his eyes—the same panic he had inflicted on Sarah and Chloe in the freezing dark.

"The family name was destroyed the day you let a boy die and hunted a child through the snow to cover your skin," I said softly, so only he could hear. "I am saving the family name by cutting out the rot."

The officers grabbed Richard’s arms, pulling them behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Julian! Sarah! Please!" Richard begged as he was dragged down the stage stairs, the flashbulbs of fifty news cameras blinding him as reporters shouted questions. "We can talk about this! Sarah, I'll pay you! I'll give you whatever you want!"

Sarah watched him go. She didn't smile. She didn't celebrate. She simply watched the man who had stolen her life be dragged away into the dark, her face serene, her dignity completely restored.

When the heavy doors closed behind the police, the ballroom was left in stunned silence.

I walked over to the podium, taking the microphone.

"Effective immediately," I announced to the room, "Vance Enterprises is establishing the Sarah Parker Foundation for Medical Ethics, with an initial endowment of twenty million dollars. Its sole purpose will be to protect nurses and medical whistleblowers from institutional corruption."

I looked over at Sarah, who was staring at me with wide, tear-filled eyes.

"And its permanent Executive Director," I added, "will be Sarah Parker."
