Chapter 5 - The Eviction Order

By Thursday afternoon, the luxury penthouse overlooking the city's central park felt less like a palace and more like a gilded trap.

Vanessa stood in the center of the nursery, which was decorated with thousands of dollars of imported silk draperies and hand-carved white furniture. She was holding the baby, her face red and tear-stained as she watched two men in dark gray uniforms place green inventory tags on the expensive oil paintings lining the hallway.

"What are you doing?" she shrieked at the foreman. "Get your hands off that! That was a gift from my father! Daniel! Make them stop!"

Daniel sat on the edge of the master bed, his head in his hands. His suit jacket was gone, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, looking completely defeated. "I can't stop them, Vanessa. The penthouse isn't registered under my name. It’s held by the Evelyn Property Trust. The trust has issued an emergency liquidation order to cover the corporate debts Aethelgard is facing due to the asset freeze."

"Liquidation?" Vanessa dropped into a plush velvet chair, clutching the baby tighter. "They can't kick us out! I just had a baby! The law protects tenants!"

"We aren't tenants, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice completely flat, devoid of energy. "We were guests. Guests who just had their invitation revoked. My mother’s lawyers gave us forty-eight hours to vacate the premises before the marshals arrive to change the locks."

"This is illegal!" she yelled, her voice cracking into a high, desperate register. "Call my father! He’s a lawyer! He’ll sue her into the ground!"

"Your father called me twenty minutes ago," Daniel said, finally looking up, his eyes bloodshot. "The bank froze his firm’s operational account this morning because he used our corporate trust as a guarantor for his secondary real estate loans. He’s facing a compliance audit from the state board. He told me that if we don't fix this with my mother, his company will be bankrupt before the end of the month."

Vanessa froze, her mouth open in a silent gasp. The reality of her situation was finally beginning to penetrate the thick wall of her privilege. The vast network of wealth, status, and luxury she had used as armor to look down upon the world was not a solid fortress—it was a web, and the spider at the center of it was the woman she had shoved onto a hospital floor.

The doorbell rang, its chimes echoing hollowly through the spacious apartment.

Daniel walked slowly to the foyer and opened the heavy mahogany door. Standing there was Officer Davis, a court marshal holding a clipboard, flanked by two private security guards wearing the distinctive silver emblem of the Evelyn Holding Group.

"Mr. Daniel Miller?" the marshal asked, checking his paperwork.

"Yes," Daniel said.

"This is an official notice of administrative eviction and property conservation," the marshal stated, handing him a packet of papers. "You have until Saturday at 12:00 p.m. to remove all personal effects, limited to clothing and immediate medical necessities. All fixtures, artwork, and furnishings purchased through the Evelyn Trust funds are to remain on site for forensic valuation. A security detail will be stationed at the door to ensure compliance."

Daniel looked past the marshal down the long, carpeted corridor of the luxury building. At the end of the hall, standing by the elevator, was Miriam Cole. She didn't say a word. She simply gave him a short, professional nod, her silver-rimmed glasses catching the hallway light like a pair of mirrors, before the elevator doors slid shut between them.
