Chapter 2 - The Silent Alarm

At 5:30 AM in the luxury maternity suite of St. Jude’s Private Hospital, Vanessa was asleep on the velvet sofa, wrapped in a cashmere throw. Daniel sat in the leather armchair, staring at his smartphone, unable to sleep.

Something about his mother’s quiet smile before she walked out of the hospital room had unsettled him. He remembered that look. He had seen it only once before—twelve years ago, when an aggressive venture capitalist had tried to hostile-takeover his first small startup. Eleanor hadn't yelled. She hadn't made a scene. She had simply smiled, made a phone call, and by the next morning, that venture capitalist was bankrupt and ousted from the industry.

Daniel shook his head, brushing the thought away. No, he thought to himself. She’s just an old woman living off her small pension in that rundown house in Brooklyn. She’s getting senile.

He tapped his phone screen to check the early market futures for Apex Dynamics. The company was scheduled to launch its flagship AI technology, "Project Sentinel," at a global tech summit in two days. The launch was supposed to make Daniel a billionaire.

Suddenly, a red banner flashed across his phone screen: ALERT: ACCESS TO APEX CORPORATE TREASURY SUSPENDED.

Daniel frowned. He swiped to dismiss the notification, thinking it was a glitch. He tried to log into his primary banking portal.

Error Code 403: User Credentials Revoked by Master Trustee.

"What the hell?" Daniel muttered, standing up quickly.

He dialed his Chief Financial Officer, Julian Vance—his cousin on his father's side, who owed his entire career to Eleanor.

"Julian! What’s going on with the corporate accounts? I’m getting security lockouts!"

Julian’s voice came through the speaker, raspy and laced with sheer panic. "Daniel! Where are you?! My phone hasn't stopped ringing for thirty minutes! The board of directors just called an emergency meeting for 8:00 AM!"

"Why?!" Daniel demanded, his voice rising.

"Because Vance Global Capital just filed a legal lien against all our intellectual property!" Julian yelled. "They called in the forty-million-dollar convertible note! They’re claiming default!"

Daniel froze. "Vance Global? What does Vance Global have to do with us? Our primary investor was Horizon Ventures!"

"Horizon Ventures was a shell company owned by Vance Global, Daniel!" Julian screamed. "Didn't you ever check the parent ownership files?! And do you know who the sole owner of Vance Global is?!"

Daniel felt a sudden, suffocating pressure in his chest. "Who?"

"Your mother, Daniel!" Julian choked out. "Eleanor Vance! She owns ninety percent of Vance Global! She owns Apex Dynamics! She owns your house! She owns everything!"

The phone slipped from Daniel’s fingers, hitting the thick carpet with a soft thud.

Behind him, Vanessa stirred on the sofa, stretching her arms elegantly. "Daniel, darling? Why are you shouting? You're going to wake the baby."

Daniel turned slowly, his face drained of every drop of color. He stared at his wife as if seeing her for the very first time.

"Vanessa..." Daniel stammered, his voice trembling violently. "What... what did you do to my mother yesterday?"

Vanessa rolled her eyes, scoffing softly as she checked her manicured nails. "Oh, don't start with that again. She was dirty, Daniel! She smelled like rain and cheap soap! I didn't want her touching our son with those filthy hands!"

Before Daniel could respond, the suite door opened, and two uniformed hospital security officers walked in, accompanied by a woman in a tailored gray suit.

"Mr. Daniel Vance? Mrs. Vanessa Vance?" the woman in gray asked coldly. "I am Sarah Miller, legal representative for St. Jude’s Executive Care. I am afraid your reservation for this VIP suite has been canceled due to non-payment."

Vanessa sat up, her eyes wide with indignation. "Excuse me?! Do you know who my husband is?! He’s the CEO of Apex Dynamics!"

"Your husband's corporate card was declined twenty minutes ago, Mrs. Vance," Sarah Miller replied, stepping aside to reveal two hospital orderlies holding standard discharge paperwork. "You have thirty minutes to pack your personal belongings and vacate the suite."
