Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of the Bride

While my father’s world exploded at the country club, my sister Emily’s marriage was crumbling at a foundation level.

Julian Vance was not a bad man, but he was entirely dependent on his father’s fortune and authority. When Arthur Vance presented Julian with the full financial dossier revealing how Emily’s family had orchestrated the entire wedding scheme, Julian realized he had been married under false pretenses.

On Wednesday evening, Emily returned home to their newly rented luxury apartment in downtown Chicago to find two large moving vans parked in the alley.

Julian stood in the living room, surrounded by packed boxes.

"Julian? What is going on?" Emily gasped, looking at her clothes being packed into wardrobe boxes by professional movers.

"My father revoked the trust fund allowance for this apartment, Emily," Julian said flatly, refusing to look her in the eyes. "The lease was signed under my name, backed by Vance Global. The lease has been terminated."

"You're kicking me out?!" she screamed.

"I’m moving back into my father’s estate," Julian said calmly. "And my lawyers filed for an annulment this morning based on financial fraud and misrepresentation."

"An annulment?!" Emily dropped her handbag, tears streaming down her face. "Julian, I love you! I did all of this for us! My parents wanted us to look good in front of your family!"

"No, Emily," Julian said, stepping back as she tried to grab his arm. "You did it because you’re superficial. You used your own sister—the woman who paid for your college, who paid for your engagement ring—and then threw her out like trash at the door of our reception because you were embarrassed by her."

Julian handed her a single small suitcase—the same size as the suitcase I had dragged across Changi and O'Hare airports.

"Your mother is waiting downstairs in her car," Julian added softly. "You can go live with her."
