Chapter 8 - The Falling Shadow

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DON'T MOVE! DROP THE WEAPON!"
The roar of powerful engines echoed across the water as three black Coast Guard tactical speedboats closed in on The Sea Sovereign, their high-intensity searchlights blinding the interior of the main salon.
From the upper deck stairs, six tactical officers dressed in black Kevlar armor and federal raid jackets burst into the room, their laser sights painting Evelyn's chest in bright red dots.
"DROP THE GUN! NOW!"
Evelyn stood frozen in the blinding white light, her hands shaking violently, the snub-nosed revolver wavering between me and Leo.
"Evelyn," Leo said calmly, stepping directly in front of me to shield my body. "It's over."
With a ragged, broken sob of pure defeat, Evelyn dropped the gun onto the velvet sofa. Two federal agents lunged forward, forcing her to the floor, pulling her arms behind her back, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
A tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a gray suit and a badge on his belt stepped into the salon, holding a secure tablet.
"Eleanor Vance?" he asked, looking at me.
"I am," I said, setting Marcus’s weapon on the table and lowering my hands.
"I’m Special Agent Miller with the FBI Financial Crimes Task Force," he said, turning to look at Leo with profound astonishment. "We received your encrypted emergency transmission and trust override signal thirty minutes ago from Charlotte... Mr. Vance, we’ve been looking for your wife's shell companies for six months, but we had no idea you were still alive."
"I am alive, Agent Miller," Leo said, his voice steady and proud. "And I have a full audio recording of Victoria Sterling admitting to poisoning me, faking my death, and laundering corporate funds."
I pulled the small digital recorder from my collar and handed it to the agent.
Evelyn was hauled to her feet by two officers, her platinum hair disheveled, her face twisted in a ugly mask of rage as she glared at us.
"You'll pay for this, Eleanor!" she screamed as she was dragged toward the gangway. "You hear me?! I’ll rot in hell before you get peace!"
"You can rot wherever you like, Evelyn," I called out as she was led into the dark night. "Just do it far away from my family."
Agent Miller looked at us, his expression softening. "Mr. Vance, we have a medical team waiting at the dock entrance. We need to get you examined, and then we’re going to need a formal statement to begin arresting David Miller and the rest of her syndicate in Atlanta."

"My daughter is in my car," Leo said, his eyes welling with tears of pure, overwhelming relief. "Can I see my daughter first?"
"Of course, sir," Agent Miller said, stepping aside. "Take all the time you need."
