CHAPTER 6: Exposure and Accountability

Put the gun down, Dad," Mara said, her voice completely steady, her weapon pointed directly at his chest.

"You won't shoot your own father, Mara," Arthur said sneeringly, stepping forward. "You don't have the stomach for it. You never did. Give me the drive, and I might let your little journalist friend live."

"You're right," Mara said, a calm, chilling smile spreading across her face. "I won't shoot you. Because I don't have to."

From behind her, Julian tapped a final key on his backup phone.

"What did you do?" Vivian asked, rushing into the room, her phone buzzing frantically in her hand. "Arthur... the data. It’s not just on that drive. It's broadcasting. Every federal agency, every major news outlet, every international human rights division... they all just received the complete unencrypted ledger. It's live on the internet."

Arthur’s face went completely bloodless. The absolute power he had wielded for decades vanished in a single microsecond. The sirens began to wail in the distance—not the local police sirens he could control, but the heavy, booming horns of the Federal Coast Guard and the FBI tactical response teams tactical units rolling onto the pier.

Vivian dropped her weapon, raising her hands in surrender as the sound of boots echoed down the hallway. Arthur sank into a server chair, the pistol slipping from his numb fingers.

"You ruined us," Arthur whispered, looking up at his daughter as if seeing her for the first time. "You destroyed everything I built for this family."

"No," Mara said, stepping forward to kick the gun away from his reach. "You destroyed it the moment you put a price tag on a child."
