CHAPTER 5 — The Man Who Sold a Lie

Dr. Harold Venn lived in a gated coastal home in Oregon.
Lucas arrived without announcement.
No security team.
No press.
Just anger and silence.
When the doctor opened the door and saw him, he didn’t even pretend to be surprised.
“I expected you eventually,” he said calmly.
Lucas stepped inside.
“You falsified my medical results.”
The doctor sighed.
“Careful with your wording.”
Lucas slammed a folder onto the table.
“I want the truth.”
The doctor poured himself tea.
“You were not infertile,” he said again.
Lucas leaned forward.
“Then explain why every test said I was.”
Harold Venn looked at him.
And smiled slightly.
“Because you were never the only patient in that system.”
That made Lucas stop.
Then the doctor continued:
“Your family requested something very specific.”
Lucas felt the room tilt.
“My family?”
“Yes,” Venn said. “They believed your marriage to Natalie Carter was… unsuitable.”
Silence.
“And what better way to end a marriage than to remove its future?”
Lucas’s voice dropped dangerously.
“You altered my results.”
“I protected an inheritance structure,” Venn corrected.
Lucas stepped closer.
“That’s not protection. That’s fraud.”
The doctor shrugged.
“In your world, those are often the same thing.”
Something inside Lucas snapped.
Not violently.
Cleanly.
Like a wire breaking under too much tension.
He whispered:
“Do they know about the children?”
Harold Venn looked away.
“That’s no longer my concern.”
Lucas understood everything in that moment.
Everything.

And for the first time in his life, he didn’t think about business.
He thought about punishment.
