Chapter 6 - The Public Explosion

By 11:00 a.m., the steps of the County Courthouse were packed with satellite news trucks, flashing lights, and dozens of reporters holding microphones.

News of the Marcus Vance estate battle had already been national headlines for months. The sudden rumor that a surprise biological heir had been born in a local hospital had drawn every major news network in the country.

Arthur Sterling stood at the center podium, flanked by me, Dr. Hayes, and Claire, who sat in her wheelchair wrapped in a thick wool coat, holding little Lily tightly against her chest.

Cameras flashed like lightning strikes as Sterling stepped up to the microphones.

“My name is Arthur Sterling,” his voice boomed across the crowded plaza, echoing off the marble pillars of the courthouse. “I represent Ethan and Claire Bennett. Nine hours ago, Mrs. Claire Bennett gave birth to healthy twins at St. Catherine’s Medical Center after seven years of painful, agonizing fertility struggles.”

The reporters went quiet, recording every word.

“What should have been the happiest day of this young couple’s life,” Sterling continued, his tone sharp and scathing, “turned into a living nightmare. Because hours after delivery, their newborn son, Noah, was abducted from the hospital nursery under the direction of Mrs. Eleanor Bennett—the legal counsel for St. Catherine’s and the child’s paternal grandmother.”

A collective gasp swept through the crowd of journalists. Microphones were thrust higher into the air.

“Why did Eleanor Bennett steal her own grandson?” Sterling roared, pointing a finger at the cameras. “Because six months ago, Apex Reproductive Center committed a horrific medical error, accidentally transferring an embryo belonging to the late billionaire Marcus Vance into Mrs. Bennett’s womb! And instead of correcting this mistake, Eleanor Bennett covered it up, blackmailed the hospital staff, and forged legal documents to seize custody of this child to gain control of Marcus Vance’s two-billion-dollar estate!”

The plaza erupted into chaos. Reporters began shouting questions all at once:

“Mr. Bennett! Did you know about the embryo swap?”

“Mrs. Bennett! Is Eleanor holding the baby now?”

“Is Marcus Vance really the biological father?”

I stepped forward to the microphone, pulling Claire’s hand into mine. The crowd quieted down as they saw the raw, unadulterated pain in my eyes.

“I don't care about Marcus Vance’s money,” I said into the barrage of microphones, my voice steady, ringing with intense passion. “I don't care about legal trusts or corporate boardrooms. The boy my mother took from that nursery grew inside my wife’s body for nine months. We felt his kicks. We chose his name. He is our son.”

I looked directly into the main television camera lens, staring straight through the glass into wherever my mother was watching.

“Eleanor,” I said, my voice cold as steel. “You took my boy. But you will not keep him. Bring Noah back... or I will dismantle everything you’ve spent your life building, brick by brick.”

Within thirty minutes, the video of the press conference went viral across every major news network and social media platform in the world.

The headlines exploded everywhere: "BILLION-DOLLAR BABY: EMBRYO SWAP AT APEX FERTILITY!"

"HOSPITAL BOARD MEMBER ACCUSED OF KIDNAPPING GRANDSON FOR VANCE ESTATE!"

By 1:00 p.m., the state judicial conduct committee announced an immediate suspension of Judge Harold Vance pending an investigation into the late-night guardianship order.

By 2:00 p.m., state police officers raided the headquarters of Apex Reproductive Center, seizing server racks, paper files, and arresting the clinic director on charges of evidence tampering and medical fraud.

And at 3:30 p.m., my phone buzzed.

It was an unlisted number.

I answered it immediately. “Ethan.”

“Ethan...” my mother’s voice came through the line. She didn't sound calm or authoritative anymore. Her voice was thin, shaking with furious, cornered desperation. “What have you done? You’ve ruined us! You’ve destroyed the family name! The board just forced my resignation!”

“Where is my son, Eleanor?” I demanded, stepping away from Sterling and Claire into a quiet hallway of the law firm where we were gathering.

“He is receiving care at my private estate!” Eleanor hissed. “Ethan, you fool! That child is worth two billion dollars! If we hold custody, our family will control the largest financial trust in the state! We could have secured your future, your children’s future, for generations!”

“I don't want your stolen blood money, Eleanor!” I shouted into the phone. “I want my boy!”

“You’re being weak!” Eleanor screamed back. “Just like your father was! You’re letting that woman and her pathetic emotions ruin the greatest opportunity this family has ever seen!”

“You have two hours, Eleanor,” I said, my voice dropping into a deadly, quiet whisper. “The State Police have already issued an emergency warrant for your arrest based on Dr. Hayes’s server logs. They are on their way to your estate right now. If Noah isn't back in Claire’s arms before they break down your front door... I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in a state prison cell.”

There was a long, suffocating silence on the line. I could hear my mother’s ragged, frantic breathing.

“You wouldn't do that to your own mother,” she whimpered softly.

“Try me,” I said, and ended the call.
