Chapter 9 - A NEW CHAPTER

A year passed.

Life moved forward with a sweet, breathtaking momentum.

Marcus and I had grown inseparable, both professionally and personally. Working together had revealed a deep compatibility—we shared the same values, the same passion for justice, and the same quiet humor. Six months after the trial ended, I moved out of my condo and into his penthouse permanently, making the space our shared home.

On a warm evening in late May, Marcus rented a private sailboat on Lake Michigan.

The sun was setting over the Chicago skyline, casting brilliant hues of orange, purple, and gold across the water. The air was cool, smelling of fresh water and summer promise.

I stood at the bow of the boat, leaning back against Marcus as his strong arms wrapped securely around my waist.

"Happy?" Marcus whispered into my hair, kissing my temple right over the faint, almost invisible white scar left by the cake stand—a scar I no longer hid, but wore as a badge of honor.

"Incredibly happy," I smiled, turning in his arms to face him. "Two years ago, I thought my life was over when my father hit me in that ballroom. I thought I would be defined by that trauma forever."

"You weren't defined by the strike, Claire," Marcus said, his amber eyes shining with love. "You were defined by how you stood up afterward. You rebuilt your life out of the rubble, and you saved dozens of people along the way."

Marcus reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat.

He got down on one knee on the wooden deck of the boat, the city lights reflecting off the water behind him.

"Claire Vance," Marcus said, opening the box to reveal a stunning, ethical cushion-cut diamond ring that sparkled intensely under the evening light. "You are the strongest, most brilliant, and most incredible woman I have ever known. I don't want to just win cases with you. I want to build a life with you. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure joy filled my eyes. For the first time in my life, I was being chosen for who I was, not for what I could provide or give up.

"Yes!" I laughed, tears spilling down my cheeks. "Yes, Marcus! Absolutely yes!"

He stood up, slipped the ring onto my finger, and pulled me into his arms, kissing me deeply as the boat gently swayed on the water. The skyline of the city illuminated the night, witnessing a love that was built on truth, respect, and unconditional support.
