CHAPTER 3: THE BOY WHO WAS SPLIT IN TWO

Inside the mansion, everything was too quiet.

Too clean.

Too controlled.

Ethan sat on a large leather sofa, feeling like he would disappear into it.

The rich boy—whose name he now knew was Oliver—sat beside him, still confused, still holding on.

The woman had not stopped crying since they arrived.

And the man—Noah—had not stopped watching Ethan.

Finally, the truth came out in pieces.

Carefully.

Like something dangerous being unwrapped.

“You were taken,” the woman said through tears. “Years ago… after the fire.”

Ethan blinked. “Fire?”

Her hands shook violently.

“There was an accident at the estate. You were only three. We thought… we thought you didn’t survive.”

Ethan felt cold.

“No,” he whispered. “I grew up alone.”

Noah stepped forward slightly.

“That’s not possible.”

Ethan looked up sharply.

“What are you saying?”

Silence.

Then the woman pulled something from her pocket.

A photo.

Old.

Faded.

It showed two identical toddlers standing side by side.

Twins.

Ethan’s breath stopped.

Oliver leaned closer.

“…There are two of me?”

The room collapsed into silence again.

Noah spoke slowly.

“There was only supposed to be one heir.”

The words hit like ice.

Ethan looked at Oliver.

Then at the woman.

Then at the man.

And suddenly, the truth wasn’t about identity.

It was about control.

“Which one of us…” Ethan said slowly, “…was supposed to disappear?”

No one answered.

Because that was the real answer.

The woman broke down completely.

“I didn’t know they took you,” she sobbed. “I thought I lost both—”

Noah interrupted sharply.

“You were told what you needed to know.”

Oliver stood up suddenly.

“No,” he said. “No, no, no—this is insane. He’s my brother?”

Ethan flinched at the word.

Brother.

It didn’t feel real.

It felt like a story someone was forcing onto his life.

Noah walked toward Ethan slowly.

“And now,” he said quietly, “you’re here.”

Ethan looked up.

Something about Noah’s tone made his skin crawl.

Not warmth.

Not relief.

Calculation.

“You’re not supposed to be outside that system,” Noah continued. “The world you’ve been living in… it’s not safe for someone like you.”

Ethan frowned.

“What world?”

Noah smiled faintly.

“The world where you can choose.”

That was the moment Ethan understood.

This wasn’t reunion.

It was recovery.

Someone was trying to take control of his existence again.

CHAPTER 4: THE CHOICE THAT BROKE THE HOUSE

That night, Ethan couldn’t sleep.

Oliver sat on the floor beside him.

“You’re really my brother?” Oliver asked quietly.

Ethan stared at the ceiling.

“I don’t know.”

That was the only honest answer.

Oliver hesitated.

“I don’t want you to leave.”

Ethan turned his head slightly.

“Why?”

Oliver shrugged.

“Because for the first time… I feel like I’m not alone.”

That sentence stayed in the air.

But downstairs, something else was happening.

Voices.

Arguing.

Noah and the woman.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

Ethan moved quietly to the staircase.

And listened.

“We cannot keep both,” Noah said coldly. “The structure collapses if the truth spreads.”

The woman snapped back, “He’s our son!”

“He is a liability.”

Silence.

Then the woman said something that changed everything.

“Then I leave with them both.”

Ethan froze.

Both?

Footsteps rushed upstairs.

The woman appeared at the top of the stairs.

Her eyes met Ethan’s.

And for the first time… she looked like a mother again.

“Ethan,” she said softly, “I don’t care what they built. I don’t care what they planned. I just want my children.”

Behind her, Noah appeared.

And for the first time, his calm broke slightly.

“You don’t understand what you’re undoing.”

Ethan stood up slowly.

“Maybe I’m tired of being something people built instead of someone who exists.”

Silence.

Oliver stepped forward.

“I choose him,” he said.

Everyone turned.

Oliver’s voice shook—but didn’t stop.

“If he leaves, I leave too.”

That was the breaking point.

Because Noah realized something he didn’t expect.

Control had a limit.

And it had just been crossed.

FINAL CHAPTER: THE FAMILY THAT CHOSE ITSELF

The scandal broke within a week.

Not quietly.

Not controllably.

But publicly.

Documents leaked.

Birth records corrected.

The truth surfaced like something buried too long.

Ethan and Oliver were twins.

Separated after an internal power conflict no one ever admitted existed.

The story spread far beyond the mansion.

Beyond the city.

Beyond control.

But Ethan didn’t care about headlines.

He stood outside the estate gates one morning.

Oliver beside him.

The woman approached them slowly.

No makeup.

No distance.

Just a mother who had lost too much time.

“I don’t expect forgiveness,” she said.

Ethan looked at her for a long time.

Then at Oliver.

Then at himself.

“I don’t know what I am supposed to feel,” he said.

Silence.

Then Oliver spoke.

“Maybe we don’t have to be what they decided.”

Ethan exhaled slowly.

For the first time in his life… the weight of hunger was gone.

Not just food.

But identity.

Choice.

Belonging.

He looked at the woman.

“I don’t want to be found,” he said quietly.

Her eyes trembled.

“I want to be chosen.”

A long silence followed.

Then she nodded.

Not demanding.

Not forcing.

Just accepting.

“Yes,” she whispered. “Then I will choose you. Every day, if I have to.”

Oliver bumped his shoulder lightly.

“Same here.”

Ethan finally smiled.

Small.

Real.

The wind moved through the gates again.

But this time, it didn’t feel cold.

It felt like something new beginning—not because the past was fixed…

…but because the future was no longer decided without him.

And for the first time in his life,

May you like

Ethan didn’t survive the world.

He belonged to it.
