Chapter 3 - The Dead Wife’s Ledger

My hands were trembling—hands that had signed execution orders and managed a multi-billion-dollar underworld empire—as I lifted the heavy iron lid.
Inside lay three items: a leather-bound diary, a digital micro-drive wrapped in lead foil, and a sealed envelope with my name written in Elena’s unmistakable, elegant handwriting.
The ink was faded, but the words burned into my retinas:
To my husband, Marcus. If you are reading this, I am already dead, and you have destroyed the wrong people.
I felt as if the floor beneath my chair had vanished, dropping me into a fathomless abyss.
"Papa?" Isabella’s small voice broke the silence. She had pushed her wheelchair across the room, her right foot resting firmly on the footplate, her left toes now twitching beneath her blanket. "What is it?"
"Marco!" I shouted toward the door.
The heavy mahogany doors flew open instantly. Marco, my chief of security and my closest friend for twenty years, stepped inside, his hand resting on his sidearm.
"Boss?"
"Take Sophia and Emma to the master guest quarters in the east wing," I ordered, my voice sounding like gravel grinding together. "Post six extra men outside their door. Treat them like royalty, but do not let them leave the wing. And get Dr. Grayson here immediately. Tell him if he isn't in this room in twenty minutes, I’ll burn his clinic to the ground."
"Understood," Marco said, motioning for Sophia and Emma to follow him.
As Emma passed my desk, she paused, looking up at me through her curls. "Don't be sad, cold-eyes man. The dark lady said the bad men are still in the big house with the high walls."
Before I could ask what she meant, Marco gently ushered them out, closing the heavy doors behind them.
I sat back down, tore open the envelope, and pulled out the letter.
My dearest Marcus,
If this box has been opened, it means Maria kept her promise, and our sweet Isabella has shown her first sign of life. I pray to God you have not burned the world down in my name, though I know your heart, my love. I know you.
You think the Moretti family killed me. You think Don Carmine ordered the strike on our car on the highway. You are wrong.
Carmine Moretti was a greedy old fool, but he was not behind the ambush. He was the scapegoat. The attack was planned from inside your own inner circle. Someone within the Vance Syndicate gave the attackers our exact route, disabled the armor sensors on the driver’s side door, and ensured the police response was delayed by twenty minutes.
I found out three weeks ago because I found the second offshore ledger hidden in the estate’s vault. The money from our shipping terminals wasn't being stolen by Moretti. It was being diverted to a private trust fund in the Cayman Islands registered under the name 'Aegis Security.'
Marcus, 'Aegis' is the private security company owned by the man you trust with your life.
The man standing outside your door right now.
Do not trust Marco.
He didn't just sell us out. He ordered the hit because I found out he was planning to replace you.
If you want to save Isabella, do not let him know you have this box. The micro-drive contains the master encryption keys to Aegis. Use it before he realizes I left a trail.
I love you forever, Elena.
I sat frozen, the letter clutched in my hands, as the blood in my veins turned to absolute ice.
Marco.
The man who had stood beside me at my wedding. The man who had taken a bullet for my father twenty years ago. The man who had helped me execute every single member of the Moretti family after Elena’s death, weeping alongside me as we buried my wife.

A gentle knock echoed off the heavy oak doors.
"Boss?" Marco’s voice called out from the hallway. "Dr. Grayson just arrived. Should I bring him in?"
