Chapter 7 - The True Legacy of Kandahar

By March, the winter had finally broken, leaving the trees of Northern Virginia blooming with the first pale green leaves of spring.

Rachel stood in the backyard of her Alexandria brick home. The "For Sale" sign had been taken down; she had decided not to sell the property to Holt Acquisitions. Instead, with the settlement money she had received from the firm’s board, she had paid off the mortgage entirely, renovated the old kitchen, and established a beautiful, fenced-in play area for the twins.

A moving truck was parked in the driveway, its ramp down as two young soldiers—volunteers from Rachel’s old unit—carried her heavy olive-drab army duffel bags into the house.

Colonel Whitaker sat on the new wooden porch, holding Liam, while Rachel rocked Noah in her arms.

"The promotion board came back today, Rachel," Whitaker said, looking at her over his glasses. "The Secretary of the Army has officially approved your advancement to Major."

Rachel smiled, a deep, genuine warmth filling her chest. "Thank you, sir. I couldn't have done any of this without you."

"You did the work, Major Carter," Whitaker said. "You survived the storm. The rest was just logistics."

He looked out over the yard, where the golden afternoon sun was casting long, warm shadows across the fresh green grass.

"Brad’s trial is set for next month," Whitaker continued. "He’s apparently trying to negotiate a plea deal. He’s offering to testify against Vanessa Holt in exchange for a suspended sentence."

"I don't care," Rachel said, looking down at Noah’s sleeping face. "He’s part of a life I don't live anymore. My focus is here. My boys, my career, my home."

"That’s the definition of victory, Rachel," Whitaker said, standing up and gently handing Liam back to her. "Knowing when the battle is won, and when it’s time to build the peace."
