Chapter 8 - The Legal Reckoning

By 4:00 PM that afternoon, the Vance mansion was surrounded by flashing red and blue lights.

Victoria Vance was led out of the front doors in silver handcuffs, her Chanel suit ruined by the slush, her face a mask of bitter, defeated rage. The fake guardianship papers were confiscated by the State Attorney, and the two private guards were loaded into separate transport vans, already talking to prosecutors to secure a plea deal.

Inside the warm study, a federal investigator sat across from Arthur, Leo, and me. I was wrapped in a thick wool blanket, a warm cup of tea between my hands. Leo sat securely on his father's lap, holding Humphrey the elephant, whose fur was still damp from the snow.

"The guard has already confessed, Mr. Vance," the investigator said, closing his notebook. "He admitted that Victoria paid him fifty thousand dollars to alter the brake lines on your late wife’s vehicle. He also confirmed that Victoria ordered the power cut today to kidnap the child before the audit fraud was discovered."

The investigator looked at Leo with profound respect. "Your son’s testimony is airtight. Between his statements and the financial records we recovered from Victoria’s office this afternoon, she will be facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted kidnapping, and corporate fraud. She won't be seeing the outside of a prison cell for the rest of her life."

Arthur nodded, his hand gently smoothing Leo’s dark hair. "Thank you, Investigator. Please ensure the press is kept away from my son."

"Of course, sir."

Once the officials left, the massive study felt different. The heavy, frozen silence that had occupied the house for two years had completely melted away, replaced by the quiet, comfortable warmth of a family that had survived the dark.

Arthur looked across the desk at me, his eyes filled with a deep, unpayable gratitude.

"You saved him, Clara," he said softly. "You saved his voice, and today, you saved his life. I don't even know how to begin to repay you."

"You don't owe me anything, Mr. Vance," I smiled, my voice tired but happy. "I just wanted to make sure he could talk to his dad again."

Leo looked up from his elephant, his dark eyes shining. "Clara is part of our home now, right, Daddy? Humphrey says she can't leave."

Arthur looked at me, a soft, rare smile touching his lips—the first real smile I had ever seen on his face. "Humphrey is very smart, Leo. Clara stays as long as she wants."
