Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Brenda’s World

Forty-eight hours after Marcus filed our counter-motion in Cook County Court, the dominoes began to fall with brutal speed.

At 2:00 PM on Thursday, two officers from the Cook County Sheriff’s Financial Crimes Division, accompanied by a senior auditor from Northern Trust Bank, walked into Brenda’s stylish boutique agency in the West Loop.

They carried a court-ordered preservation warrant.

By 4:00 PM, Brenda’s corporate bank accounts were completely frozen. Her computers were seized for forensic auditing, and her staff was sent home.

At 5:30 PM, my phone rang. It was Brenda.

I answered.

"Kenneth!" she shrieked into the receiver, her voice high-pitched, hyperventilating, completely unraveled. "What did you do?! What did you tell the bank?!"

"I didn't tell them anything, Brenda," I said calmly, leaning back in my office chair. "My legal team simply submitted our full financial disclosure in response to Dad’s lawsuit. Your loan documents were part of the public court record."

"They froze everything!" she sobbed, abandoning all her previous arrogance. "I can't pay rent on the store! I can't pay my employees! The bank manager said they are reviewing my loan applications for fraud! Kenneth, please! You have to fix this! Tell them it was a mistake! Tell them it was a loan from you!"

"I can't do that, Brenda," I said smoothly. "Because that would be perjury. And unlike you, I value my integrity."

"You are destroying my life!" she screamed, her tears turning into frantic rage. "I have two kids! How am I supposed to feed my kids?!"

I let her words hang in the silent air for three long seconds.

"That's a funny question, Brenda," I said quietly. "Did you think about how to feed your kids when you sat them at the center head table with silver ribbons and gift bags, while my children sat next to dirty dishes in the dark?"

"That was Mom’s idea!" she lied desperately. "Mom picked the seating chart! I had nothing to do with it!"

"You laughed, Brenda," I recalled, my memory crystal clear. "When Dad pointed my son toward the back table behind the plants, you laughed and adjusted your diamond earrings. The same earrings I paid for."

"Kenneth, please..." she whimpered. "Please... I’ll apologize to Noah. I’ll go to your house right now and get on my knees in front of Noah and Emily. Just please pull the legal filing back!"

"It’s out of my hands, Brenda," I said flatly. "You wanted to play adult games with business loans and lawsuits. Now you have to deal with adult consequences."

"I'm your sister!" she screamed.

"You were my sister," I corrected her. "Now, you're just a debtor."

I hung up the phone.

Ten minutes later, my assistant knocked on my door.

"Mr. Miller?" she said nervously. "Your father is downstairs in the lobby. Security says he’s causing a scene and refusing to leave until he sees you."

I stood up, buttoned my suit jacket, and looked at her.

"Tell security to give him two options," I instructed. "He can leave the building voluntarily in two minutes, or they can have the police escort him out in handcuffs for criminal trespass."

My assistant nodded, her eyes wide, and hurried out.

I walked over to my floor-to-ceiling window, watching the street forty floors below. A minute later, I saw my father being escorted out of the revolving glass doors by four security officers, shouting at the sky, completely powerless.
