Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Alliance

By 3:00 PM, the courtroom reconvened, the atmosphere tense and heavy. The two hours of recess had been disastrous for Denise’s camp.
When Judge Reynolds took her seat, her expression was carved out of granite. She looked down at Denise and Jonathan with absolute disgust.
"Mrs. Wallace," Judge Reynolds said, her voice echoing through the quiet room. "I have listened to the audio recording submitted by the defense. Your statements regarding the child's status as a 'clean corporate transaction' and your explicit threats against the respondent’s livelihood are some of the most egregious displays of maternal misconduct I have witnessed in my thirty years on this bench."
Denise stood up, her voice trembling. "Your Honor, that was taken out of context—"
"Sit down, counselor," the judge snapped at Jonathan’s attorney, who was trying to intervene. "The petition to vacate the permanent guardianship status is denied with prejudice. The court finds that the petitioner abandoned the child in 2007 with clear intent to forfeit parental rights, and that her recent return was motivated entirely by corporate financial gain rather than any bona fide parental interest."
The gallery broke into cheers. Joanna let out a long, shuddering breath, her tears finally falling as Simon wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight against his chest.
But the judge wasn't done.
"Furthermore," Judge Reynolds continued, "I am forwarding the transcript of this hearing, along with the audio evidence, to the state attorney general’s office for review regarding potential corporate coercion, witness intimidation, and attempted fraud relating to the Wallace Global Logistics trust structures."
Jonathan stood up immediately, buttoning his suit jacket, his face completely devoid of expression. He didn't look at Denise as she reached out to grab his sleeve.
"Jonathan, please," Denise whispered, her voice filled with sudden, desperate panic. "We can appeal this. We can find another way."

"The engagement is over, Denise," Jonathan said coldly, loud enough for the reporters in the front row to hear. "My firm cannot be associated with a federal fraud investigation. My assistant will contact you regarding the return of the corporate apartment key."
He walked out of the courtroom through the side exit, leaving Denise standing alone at the defense table, surrounded by the ruins of the empire she had spent nineteen years trying to build at the expense of her son's life.
