Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the Weekend

Friday evening arrived with a strange, unfamiliar quiet.

For the first time in six years, I didn't have a packed bag by the door. I didn't have a mental checklist of toddler schedules, nap times, and dietary restrictions running through my brain.

At 6:00 PM—the exact hour Rachel used to grab her car keys and vanish for the weekend—I was sitting on the front porch of my own apartment. Yes, my own apartment. On Thursday, I had officially packed my remaining boxes, left my childhood home behind, and moved into a sunlit two-bedroom place just fifteen minutes away across town.

Michael and Mom had agreed to co-parent Leo and Maya under strict legal supervision, with professional counseling mandated for Rachel. It wasn't a fairy-tale ending, but it was a functional, honest beginning.

My phone buzzed on the small wooden table beside my chair. It was a text message from an old college friend, Sarah, whom I hadn't seen in over four years.

“Hey Olivia! Some of us are getting together for dinner downtown tonight. It’s been ages. Are you free?”

I stared at the screen for a long moment, a slow smile spreading across my face.

Free.

The word didn't feel like an insult anymore. It didn't feel like a weapon used to guilt me into unpaid servitude. It felt like a vast, open horizon.

I tapped the screen and typed back my reply:

May you like

“I’m free. See you at eight.”

I stood up, stretched my arms toward the warm evening sky, and walked inside to pick out an outfit that didn't smell like baby formula or spilled juice. For the first time in six years, my weekend belonged entirely to me.
