Chapter 10 - The Sovereign House

Two months later.
Spring had finally broken across the Pacific Northwest, turning the snow-covered pine forests into a vibrant, emerald-green ocean of new life.
The grand ballroom of the Mercer estate was filled with the soft, elegant strains of a string quartet playing classical waltzes beneath the polished crystal chandeliers.
There were no corrupt politicians. No loan sharks. No greedy relatives trying to forge signatures or sell us out to the highest bidder.
Just two hundred genuine friends, loyal neighbors, and military colleagues gathered to celebrate something far more powerful than a wedding reception—a renewal of vows.
In the center of the polished hardwood dance floor, Rachel stood wearing a breathtaking floor-length gown of ivory silk that flowed around her like poured moonlight. Her dark hair was pinned back with simple silver combs, completely free of the terror and cold that had gripped her throat two months ago.
I held her close, my hands resting securely at her waist, our steps perfectly synchronized to the rhythm of the strings.
“You know,” Rachel whispered, resting her head softly against my shoulder, “when I stood out there in the freezing snow, watching the light through the dining room window... I genuinely thought that was the end of the story.”
“It wasn't the end,” I murmured into her hair, kissing her temple gently. “It was just the opening chapter.”
She pulled back slightly, looking up into my eyes with a bright, radiant smile that put every star in the night sky to shame.
“And how does the story end, Sergeant Mercer?”

I smiled back, pulling her tighter against my chest as the music swelled around us, filling the vast, beautiful, and completely secure house with warmth, laughter, and an unbreakable love.
“It doesn't,” I said. “We own the ledger now.”
