Chapter 5 - THE CLEANING OF THE HOUSE

By sunrise, the rain had finally stopped over East Tennessee.

The golden morning light broke through the clouds, illuminating the sprawling hills around Knoxville. Federal agents, state troopers, and forensic units were swarming Marcus Vance's estate, seizing files, computers, and assets. Vance was led away in handcuffs, his legal career, wealth, and freedom permanently destroyed.

I sat on the front bumper of my armored SUV, holding a hot cup of coffee, watching the federal vehicles line up along the driveway.

The door of the SUV opened, and Elena stepped out. He walked over to me, wrapping his denim jacket tight against the morning chill.

"Is it over?" Elena asked softly, sitting down on the bumper beside me.

"The bad men are going to prison for a very long time, Elena," I said, handing him a warm bottle of juice from the cooler. "Dominic Moretti, Marcus Vance, and Thomas Dalton. None of them will ever touch you, Caleb, or Rosie again."

Elena looked out over the vast, green landscape of the estate. "What happens to us now?"

The question hung in the cool morning air.

Elena was twelve years old. He had spent three years acting as a mother and father to his younger siblings, living in fear, hiding in abandoned buildings, eating beans off a portable stove, and expecting the world to crush him at any moment.

He had no living relatives left.

By law, the state child protective services would step in. Caleb, Rosie, and Elena would be placed into the Tennessee foster care system—likely separated into different group homes across the state.

I looked down at the twelve-year-old boy beside me. I saw myself at twelve years old—standing in the cold rooms of the Willow Creek house after my father was taken away, waiting for the world to tear my life apart.

"Elena," I said quietly. "Do you want to stay together with Caleb and Rosie?"

Elena’s eyes filled with sudden, intense tears. "More than anything in the world. I promised my mother before she died that I would never let anyone separate us."

"Then nobody will," I said firmly.

I stood up, pulling my phone from my pocket, and dialed my new head attorney—a brilliant, uncorruptible female lawyer named Evelyn Reed whom I had placed in charge of my legitimate corporate enterprises.

"Mason," Evelyn answered immediately. "The federal filings are clean. Vance is locked up tight. What do you need?"

"Evelyn," I said, looking at Elena. "I need you to prepare emergency guardianship and adoption papers."

Evelyn paused over the line. "Adoption papers? For who?"

"For three children," I said. "Elena, Caleb, and Rosie Ruiz. I want them legally placed under my permanent protection and custody by the end of the week."

"Mason... you are a high-profile corporate figure with... a complicated background," Evelyn noted cautiously. "The state board will scrutinize your home life."

"Then buy a house, Evelyn," I commanded smoothly. "Buy the largest, safest, most beautiful historic estate in East Tennessee. Put twenty million dollars into a private educational trust fund for the children. Make sure the state board sees that these children will have the best life, the best education, and the absolute highest level of protection in the country."

Evelyn smiled softly over the phone. "Consider it done, Mason."

I hung up the phone and looked down at Elena.

Elena was staring at me, his mouth slightly open, tears streaming down his cheeks. "You... you want us?"

"I don't just want you, Elena," I said gently, resting my hand on his head. "I need you. You reminded me who I was before I became a monster."
